**Senior Scientist**
£43,116 to £49,944 per annum _(We normally offer a starting salary at the start of the range)_
Permanent / full time (37.5 hours per week based in the UK)
Greenpeace International (GPI) is looking for a **Senior Scientist** to join the GPI Science Unit which is part of the newly formed Political, Science and Research Pillar. Being part of the wider International Programme Department, the Science Unit collaborates with others to provide vision, strategic direction, steer and support for an ambitious Global Programme, with a focus on impact-critical National and Regional Organisations (NROs).
As Senior Scientist, you will give scientific support to Greenpeace campaigns with special responsibility for climate science developments, including critical review of proposed technological developments such as geoengineering and carbon capture and storage and the ways in which such proposals potentially extend the continued use of fossil fuels. You will bring your deep knowledge and research experience, to provide strategic input to the Greenpeace global programme.
Ensuring the highest scientific standards are developed and maintained, will be key to this role. In addition, you will need to monitor and keep conversant with current scientific thinking on relevant issues, so as to promote science and its use in policy in a way which will facilitate environmental protection.
You will be required to represent Greenpeace at global and national high-level meetings and processes that require scientific and technical credibility on the issue of climate change, its diverse impacts and potential mitigations.
**In this role you will**:
- Provide strategic input and recommendations to shape global programme goals and strategies with a scientific basis
- Support campaign planning and implementation through science-related elements
- Design and conduct field research projects, produce reports based on data
- Act as a representative of Greenpeace International at global and national high-level meetings requiring scientific credibility on climate change, in addition to external bodies and the media as necessary.
- Stay at the forefront of scientific advancements relating to climate change and uphold the highest standards of research
- Evaluate and provide insights on emerging technologies such as geoengineering and carbon capture and storage
- Assist in quality control functions of the Science Unit
- Provide input on science strategy and tactics for campaigns
- Advise on health and safety aspects of scientific field activities
- Participate in project development within the Science Unit
- Collaborate with Science Unit staff and maintain professional contacts with relevant scientists
- Assist in Science Unit work related to specific geographical regions

- PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline with a commitment to developing a strong scientific publication record.
- A good understanding of how science works and an ability to build strong, productive networks and relationships.
- Strong research, analysis and reporting skills. The ability to effectively prioritise work elements, interpret findings and provide actionable insights.
- An interest in citizen science as it relates to movement building and people powered campaigning.
- Strong advocacy skills - the ability to help diverse teams to achieve agreed goals and to drive real-world change.
- Experience in working with multicultural staff and teams and across borders.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Demonstrable support for and belief in the Greenpeace network core aims and values.
**What you can expect**:
The Greenpeace International Research Laboratories are part of the Political, Science and Research Unit at Greenpeace International. Based at the University of Exeter in the UK, the laboratories provide scientific advice and analytical support to Greenpeace offices worldwide, over a range of disciplines. The laboratories are equipped with hardware for the analysis of heavy metal and organic contaminants in a range of environmental samples. An extensive database of scientific literature has been built up since 1986 and serves as a core information resource.
The expertise of the group encompasses a number of disciplines, including toxicology, organic and inorganic analytical chemistry, biochemistry and terrestrial and marine ecology.
