Software Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Linux Kernel Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. We are hiring a Software Engineering Manager to lead technical teams responsible for the delivery and ongoing support of all Ubuntu Linux kernels. This role is ideal for an experienced manager or a highly proficient technical lead who is passionate about Linux and eager to take on a broader management responsibility. Responsibilities Lead a distributed team of software engineers in your geographic region, focusing on delivery of the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Own specific technical domains such as integration with silicon or cloud partners, hardware compatibility, quality control, security mitigation, and build/test automation. Engage with other Canonical teams, the open‑source community, and commercial partners to align on strategy and execution. Facilitate technical delivery, coach engineers, positively influence culture, and drive continuous improvement. Qualifications Significant programming experience in C; experience with Python, Golang, or similar languages is highly regarded. Substantial experience with operating system kernel internals; Linux experience is preferable but not required. Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers. Ability to coordinate across teams with differing technical focus. Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with Git. Experience with software packaging formats; direct Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience is highly regarded. Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills. Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long. Nice‑to‑have skills Experience with kernel patching and debugging. Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and low‑level system engineering. Solid background in driving CI/CD and process automation initiatives. Prior public involvement with an open‑source project.
