Assistant Breeder

Key Responsibilities: To assist, support, implement, and evaluate plant breeding project components as needed for PanAmerican Seed Co. Plant Breeders in executing their high-priority projects. This may include training and supervising technicians. The Assistant Plant Breeder will also be trained in commercial flower breeding and may have small, limited plant breeding projects of their own.

Essential Functions – What needs to Be Accomplished?

• Assist with organization of trials, bioassays, note-taking, documentation, and execution of various breeding cycle aspects.
• Manage small plant breeding projects assigned by a Regional Breeding Director to gain proficiency.
• Supervise and train current breeder technicians.
• Assist in executing breeder trials at off-site locations.
• Interact effectively with a range of skills and personalities.
• Collaborate with the breeding supervisor, product manager, production, Helix, and culture research to ensure high product quality.

Other Responsibilities: Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements:

• BS in Horticulture with emphasis on Plant Sciences/Plant Breeding or relevant experience.
• Ability to work effectively in a team within a matrix organization.
• Motivated, organized, with good communication skills.
• Proficient in MS Office and breeding database software.
• Infrequent travel as directed by Supervisor.

Physical Requirements:

• Work in greenhouse environments with long standing periods.
• Occasional heavy lifting and moving.

Scope of Responsibility:

• Potential supervisory responsibilities as directed.
• Possible budgetary responsibilities at payroll level.

Salary: $27.50 - $36.00 per hour.
