We promote a distributed work model, with teams meeting in person a few times a year at interesting locations worldwide.We are hiring an Engineering Manager for IAM to develop high-performing Go and Python services and secure identity and access management solutions used across all company products, including Ubuntu One SSO, Juju, LXD, and MAAS. The role involves defining how users, clients, and community members access open source applications.This position offers an opportunity for a software engineering manager passionate about distributed systems operations to influence the future of identity management at Canonical. Experience in IAM is preferred but not mandatory. The role involves working with upstream open source projects and internal teams to deliver high-quality, deployable software on bare metal, cloud, and Kubernetes environments.As the engineering manager, you will bring significant software development experience, Kubernetes expertise, and a focus on software design, performance, and security. Responsibilities include collaborating with product management on technical vision, managing the team backlog, reviewing code, and mentoring team members. You will also design software, write code and tests, conduct code reviews, document, and troubleshoot issues.You will work with industry-leading teams within Canonical, ensuring your work is supported by robust data stores and observable through our Kubernetes-based observability stack. Engagement with open source communities through events, webinars, and conferences is encouraged.Location:
This role is remote, based in the EMEA or AMER regions.What we are looking for:
Proven experience leading high-performance software engineering teamsProficiency in Go and Python developmentAbility to design and implement complex distributed systemsExperience with container technology and KubernetesStrong understanding of security and performance in software/infrastructureExperience with large-scale distributed systemsKnowledge of IAM technologies and standards (desirable)Excellent academic record from high school and universityDegree in a technical field or a compelling alternative narrativeProfessional proficiency in English, with strong presentation skillsExcellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountabilityWillingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeksWhat we offer:
