Senior Critical Environment Technician

As a Senior Critical Environment Technician (CET) in Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team, you will maintain the critical infrastructure that keeps our datacenters up and running. This could be anything from coordinating with supplier/vendors, working closely with management to address operational, risk and safety situations, mentoring other CE technicians, understanding how critical environment equipment works, performing maintenance, responding to onsite incidents, and using telemetry and other platforms to monitor equipment performance. As a CO+I Critical Environment Technician, you deliver core infrastructure and foundational technologies that support Microsoft Azure, Office 365, Bing, Xbox, OneDrive and more. In this environment you may be required to travel for business support on a 0‑25% basis. Responsibilities Critical Environment Culture Understand, follow, and enforce safety and security requirements, recognize unsafe conditions, respond to hazards, participate in required trainings, assess resources necessary to support EHS, and maintain a safe working culture. Equipment and Systems Maintenance Perform planned, predictive, corrective maintenance for complex equipment without supervision, acting as a subject matter expert for one discipline, using THA, MSOW or permitting requirements, escalating activities, prioritizing tasks, documenting, and consulting others. Act as SME for troubleshooting across multiple equipment types, ensuring settings meet design parameters, communicating or escalating to suppliers, and escalating vendor quality issues. Escort third‑party contractors, coordinate vendor activities, ensure compliance with LORs and AHJ regulations, and resolve escalated vendor issues. Process MSOWs, coordinate contractor schedules, perform inspections, and present for review and approval. Prepare complex reports (e.g., RCA), review prior reports, develop MOPs, SOPs, and DMOPs, and coach less experienced technicians. Equipment and Systems Operations Execute complex tasks independently, advise peers, provide training, and operate all systems safely. Lead onsite incident response, coordinate with critical facilities, gather incident data, develop EOPs, and lead emergency monitoring. Inspect and supervise critical environment equipment, recognize alarm meanings, monitor performance, analyze trends, and advise peers. Use CMMS to track equipment assets, complete work orders, track hours, and coach staff on best practices. Physical Requirements Occasional climbing of ladders, frequent climbing of stairs/ramps, prolonged standing, occasional lifting 50 lb, occasional push/pull 50‑75 lb with assistive device, and normal visual and color vision for electrical work. Qualifications Required / Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent. 3+ years of mission‑critical services work (e.g., data centers, oil & gas refineries, hospitals, manufacturing). 1+ year in a specialized area (mechanical, electrical, controls). Business‑level fluency in English. Ability to work 12‑hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Up to 25% travel. Background Check Requirements Must pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire and every two years thereafter. Additional or Preferred Qualifications Associate’s Degree or technical trade certification plus 4+ years of mission‑critical services experience.
