Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  2. Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies, and procedures. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  3. Performs preventive maintenance on primary Power Plant generators, remote site and airfield generators, and various emergency generators.
  4. Performs on-site troubleshooting, repairs, and overhauls of generator engines.
  5. Responds to station power outages and equipment failures as required.
  6. Willingness to carry a radio or pager for after hours call outs.
  7. Completes maintenance records and documents all maintenance performed and maintains operating logbooks and databases as required.
  8. Schedules diesel engine/generator operations in order to maintain a 3000-hour spread between engines.
  9. Operates Power Plant equipment in an efficient and economical manner.
  10. Coordinates with the Utilities Supervisor or their on-site representative to order repair and/or spare parts, maintenance parts, assemblies, tools, and consumables.
  11. Maintains control of plant tools, manuals, repair parts, assemblies, and consumables.
  12. Maintains inventory accuracy at 98% or better.
  13. Ability to work alone or within a team depending on the situation.
  14. Trains Power Plant Operators and Mechanics on Power Plant operation and equipment as directed.
  15. Ability to cover Power Plant Operator shift/rounds as required.
  16. Advises the Utilities Supervisor or their on-site representative of the status of power production equipment and systems.
  17. Willingness to work a rotating shift; day, swing, or night shift.
  18. Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly affected by this position's work activities.
  19. Provides appropriate safety training to employees and documents the training.
  20. Evaluates job hazards and communicates information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and/or daily crew meetings.
  21. Interprets project tasking utilizing design drawings, specifications, and diagrams.
  22. Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism.
  23. Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with their subordinates as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs.
  24. May be required to work outside on various jobsites in extreme cold weather and environmentally challenging conditions.
  25. Interacts with other partner companies, the National Science Foundation, military, and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person. Is kind, courteous, cooperative, and professional at all times.
  26. Participates in dormitory chores while deployed to Antarctica.
  27. Performs other duties as required.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates, and Licenses:

  1. High School diploma or GED.
  2. Minimum five (5) years' experience required in diesel powered generators, marine diesel engines, or industrial diesel engines.
  3. At least two of the five years' experience must be in a supervisory role.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  1. Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once is required.
  2. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of diesel electric generating equipment is required.
  3. Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine driven electric generators is required.
  4. Ability to maintain a professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment is required.
  5. Working comprehension of electrical distribution, control panels, and medium voltage switchgear.
  6. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.

Preferred:

  1. Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations.
  2. Previous mechanical experience on 1MW and larger diesel engine/generators.
  3. Experience with Caterpillar documentation and software (ET, SIS).
  4. Training, certification, or experience on Caterpillar 3500 / 3600 series engines.
  5. Experience working with remote field generators.

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

  1. Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
  2. Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica.
  3. Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF.
  4. Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
