Narrative Designer

We are ARVORE, a startup in the virtual reality content creation scene.

Based in São Paulo, our studio creates, designs, produces, and develops world-class interactive experiences and games for all current and future high-end immersive platforms, including virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality.

ARVORE is looking to hire a technically adept, creative individual to complement our team. You will have the opportunity to work on innovative immersive and narrative-driven XR experiences, iterating and prototyping with a high level of creative freedom and with the opportunity to guide the direction of some of these endeavors.

ARVORE seeks a creative NARRATIVE DESIGNER to design the narrative elements of our experiences and to champion story within the development process.

When designing a narrative, we all know the golden rule: "show, don't tell". In interactive content, we may also add "do, don't show". The Narrative Designer must think in actions and interactions, inviting the audience to take actions and immerse their bodies within a story. It is crucial to consider the medium and the user's body when designing a VR experience.

The ND's role is to ensure that interactions and narrative work seamlessly, considering the specificities of each project.

• Conceive, create, and advocate for appropriate narrative features within the team, writing narrative content and ensuring it is embraced by the final product;
• Develop documents and tools that materialize the project's narrative content, such as emotion curves, beat sheets, synopses, mind maps, screenplays, and similar tools;
• Create descriptions and backstories for characters, locations, objects, and events, collaborating with the Production Design team and the creative director to develop worldbuilding systems;
• Collaborate with the Development team to create real-time tools for implementing the narrative content in the experience;
• Work with the Game Design team and Creative Director to define the flow of events, overseeing dialogues, animations, audio, event timings, props, etc.;
• Create functional documentation to keep the team and stakeholders informed about the narrative elements;
• Ensure the project is understandable and cohesive from the user's perspective, following and reporting on user tests;
• Produce summaries of the narrative content for distribution, such as festival registrations and pitch decks;
• Build a repertoire of narrative VR experiences and present new immersive experiences to the team.

• Exceptional writing ability;
• Fluency in Portuguese and English;
• Willingness to observe, absorb, and modify their work per project needs;
• Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication across disciplines;
• Previous experience in narrative content creation teams;
• Constantly seeking to learn new skills and expand their repertoire;
• Ability to give and receive constructive and creative feedback;
• Deep understanding of narrative structures, plot beats, emotional progression, and classical storytelling elements;
• Ability to balance narrative, interaction, and ludology aspects in immersive experiences, integrating story and gameplay;
• Passion for movies, TV, visual arts, literature, theater, and great stories across media;
• Experience in scriptwriting for film, TV, or games;
• Technical or Bachelor of Arts degree in Cinema, Media, Creative Writing, Literature, or equivalent practical experience;
• Openness to learning new methods and frameworks.

• Familiarity with Google G Suite and screenwriting software;
• Previous experience with VR and AR content;
• Experience working in a studio or production company;
• Video game industry experience;
• A passion for Virtual Reality.
