Responsibilities

  • Design, architect, and implement scalable, distributed microservices.
  • Refine high-level designs into detailed architectural plans.
  • Develop and deliver product features with comprehensive unit tests.
  • Communicate estimates, schedules, issues, and dependencies effectively.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of relevant development experience.
  • Experience in a microservices-oriented architecture.
  • Start-up experience is highly preferred.
  • Strong English communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Pragmatic, business-oriented mindset.
  • Deep understanding of software design patterns and their applications.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Proficiency in one or more of the following languages (in order of preference): Java, Kotlin, Node.
  • Experience with GraphQL services (highly preferred).
  • Expertise in microservice orchestration.
  • Knowledge of concurrent development (multi-threading, synchronization).
  • Strong grasp of data structures (trees, graphs, data partitioning strategies).
  • Experience with caching strategies (loading caches, distributed caches, eviction caches, thin clients), particularly Redis.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux and Bash.
  • Experience with databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, Redshift, Athena, BigQuery, Elastic Search, Kafka.
  • Familiarity with AWS data technologies: Kinesis, Lambda, SQS, RDS.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools, Kubernetes, EC2, Docker.

Additional Attributes

  • Strong understanding of Shopify APIs and ecosystem is a big plus.
  • Familiarity with Agile development environment.
  • Positive attitude and enjoys working in a multifaceted, dynamic, and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate technical terms to the engineering team and layman's terms to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes and handle ambiguity.
  • Backend engineering experience preferred; full-stack engineers with strong backend skills are also acceptable.

Ideal Candidate

  • Engineers with experience in API integration and the e-commerce space are highly preferred.
  • Experience from companies like Shopify, BigCommerce, and Adobe Commerce is advantageous.
  • Engineers who have built external-facing APIs or worked in similar roles at companies like Facebook are suitable.
  • Preference for candidates who have worked in real-life companies over those with only project-based experience.
  • Candidates with experience in technologies like .NET or Node and some years in Java or Kotlin are acceptable as long as they demonstrate strong backend capabilities.
