Primary Purpose of the Position

Classroom assistants at Graded play an essential role in the development of the children. They are actively involved in supporting individual students, small groups of students, and the entire class throughout the day. The main objective of an assistant is to support the classroom teacher(s) and the learning taking place within the classroom.


Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the classroom teacher to support all children in the class.
  • Assist classroom teachers with lesson preparation by getting materials ready and setting up equipment prior to class or during times when students are not in class.
  • Review lesson material with students individually or in small groups when needed.
  • Ensure the classroom environment is safe and clean.
  • Supervise students during non-classroom times including in-between classes, during lunch, during recess, and on field trips.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to recognize issues students are facing and recommend solutions.
  • Comply with school and class rules.
  • Attend parent conferences when requested by the classroom teacher. Any other communication with families about a child should only occur in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
  • At times classroom assistants may be asked to cover for the classroom teacher when they must be absent. In this case, the classroom teacher will provide lesson plans for the assistant.

  • Excellent English communication skills, including writing, speaking, and interpersonal conversation
