Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
Lead for the Embassy on links with Congress and on analysis and reporting on developments in Brazilian politics (federal and state levels) and implications for UK. Support teams across the UK Network in Brazil to build the right political relationships to achieve their objectives across all areas of UK interest, from trade and investment, to climate and energy, to defence and security. You will also support the Political Counsellor in leading the Political Team across Brasilia, Rio and Sao Paulo.

**The UK’s Brazil Network and Political Team**:
The UK’s Brazil Network includes the Embassy in Brasilia, and consulates in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Recife and covers political, economic, climate, trade and commercial work. Teams across the Network work together to strengthen the UK and Brazil’s strategic relationship by deepening our trade ties, safeguarding our security, and tackling common climate and environmental challenges, as well as promoting our values, protecting human rights and democratic freedoms, and leveraging the UK’s position as a global hub for science and Innovation.

The work of the Political Team projects our values and defends our interests in Brazil. As the Senior Political Adviser, you will play a central role in delivery of Brazil Network priorities, helping to shape the UK’s future relationship with Brazil. The political team that has a broad remit including domestic politics, foreign policy, bilateral and multilateral engagement, security, human rights, democratic freedoms and open societies.

**Roles and responsibilities**:
This is an excellent senior adviser job in the British Embassy, Brasilia. It involves leading on the fascinating area of Brazilian politics at the federal and state level, linking it to the bilateral relationship between the UK and Brazil. You will be a key adviser for the Ambassador and other senior colleagues. While some flexibility will be needed, you can expect to:

- ** Develop and lead on delivery of a strategy for UK engagement with Congress**, leveraging your networks and developing relationships within priority federal and state politicians you will support senior leadership and teams across the Brazil network identify, prioritise and access key influencers across priority areas.
- Advise on all aspects of the UK government’s **political engagement** in Brazil. Develop and deliver engagement to build excellent relationships across the “3 powers” (executive, legislative and judiciary) as well as civil society. Engaging with the Brazilian government (federal and state level) and Congress will be a top priority. You will be responsible for making sure that the Embassy and other UK diplomatic offices in Brazil, from the Ambassador down, have the right relationships with all the key people (politicians and advisers).
- ** Deliver insightful and regular analysis** to spot emerging opportunities or barriers that have the potential to impact delivery of UK priorities in the short or long term, offering guidance to Brazil network teams on how they should respond.
- ** Excellent, succinct and timely communication of key issues and developments** across the Brazil Network and to London.
- ** Support delivery of the regional outreach strategy** for the UK government in Brazil, advising on political priorities and identifying opportunities in key states and cities.
- Ensure** incoming high level HMG visitors** (government ministers and senior officials) have impactful political meetings as part of their visit agenda.
- ** Deputise for the Political Counsellor** and support in leading the Political Team of around 18 staff across Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio, helping maintain high quality work, good management of financial and human resources and a focus on wellbeing.
- As a member of our **leadership cadre**, contribute to the internal leadership and management of the UK Network in Brazil, and take a role in our programme to make the UK in Brazil an excellent place to work. Uphold and role-model our values of Respect, Excellence and Together.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Extensive experience in working with politics or in a relevant field
- Experience in providing evidenced research, reporting and analysis that leverages external networks
- Hold a University degree or two years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills
- Ability to make nuanced and tailored judgements based on a wide range of information and in support of strategic outcomes

**Language requirements**:
Language: Portuguese and English

Level of language required: Fluency in each, including the ability to write reports for senior audiences in English.
