Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
This is a fascinating and rewarding position in the British Embassy’s Political Team to deliver key priorities for the UK’s diplomatic network in Brazil. The jobholder will have a role in providing political analysis and support in discreet areas of bilateral and domestic policy, although the specific issues may vary, the current jobholder works on human rights (gender equality, LGBT+ rights, racial equality and indigenous rights), serious organised crime, security and cybersecurity, and South Atlantic issues while working closely with relevant internal and external stakeholders to achieve their goals.

This position also provides support to the Senior Political Adviser to identify developments in Brazilian politics relevant to UK objectives and then providing analysis, building contacts and making introductions to the relevant team with strategic planning for the Ambassador’s and UK ministers’ engagement at the Federal level, as well as Congress mapping.

The jobholder may also be responsible for delivering targeted projects within these areas to deliver key priorities for the UK’s diplomatic network in Brazil.

**Roles and responsibilities**:
The jobholder will support a range of political work, while some limited programme management may be required depending on project funding. This is an excellent opportunity to gain wide experience in a dynamic international environment.

Political:

- Analysis and research: Providing analysis, advice and support to the political team (human rights, serious organised crime, security and cybersecurity, and South Atlantic issues, although this may vary over time). This involves a variety of work from producing strategies, briefings, mapping and meeting external stakeholders, and wider research pieces, as well as assisting to organise meetings, events and visits for senior embassy staff and other visitors.
- Contribute to and lead briefings and wider research pieces.
- Identify and manage key stakeholders, internally and externally, including setting-up meetings.
- Assist in the organization of programmes and events for HMA, senior embassy staff and other visitors, including UK Ministerial visits.

Line Management:

- This jobholder is expected to directly manage a high performing and motivated intern, overseeing their workload, delivery, and professional development.

Corporate:

- In line with wider Embassy responsibilities, the jobholder is expected to participate in key British Embassy/Brazil network activities to make the workplace a welcoming and supportive environment for all. There are a variety of opportunities available depending on the jobholder’s interests, skills and abilities. For example, the current job holder led on preventing Sexual Exploitation, Harassment and Abuse (a key UK priority) for the UK network in Brazil.

Political team members will need to be flexible and ready to step into new areas at short notice to support colleagues at particularly busy times or as priorities change.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Holds a university degree and/or two years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and good political judgment.
- Strong IT skills (MS Word and Excel).
- Proactive and creative self-starter.
- Fluent in both English and Portuguese (written and spoken) - including the ability to write reports for senior audiences in English and excellent speaking skills for contact with senior officials.
- Right to live and work in Brasilia.
- Knowledge of the Brazilian political landscape.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Experience in programme/project management.
- Experience with policy in any of the aforementioned areas (human rights, serious organised crime, security and cybersecurity, etc).
- Existing political contacts/network.
