Scientific Leadership Manager Role

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Manager is a strategic position that requires effective leadership, scientific expertise, and communication skills. As a key member of the Medical Affairs team, the MSL Manager plays a vital role in leading a team of MSLs who engage in scientific exchange with healthcare professionals and scientists.

The team's activities are focused on regional and national scientific leaders and key decision makers. The MSL Manager will lead the MSL team assigned to specific therapeutic areas, providing input and insight based on their MSL team's interaction with SLs and other stakeholders.

This translates into concrete engagement plans in the field, ensuring alignment with the Medical Affairs plan. The MSL Manager must be able to assign geographic territories and/or tumor/indication to each MSL, ensuring strategic alignment.

They must also ensure each MSL is aware of all SL/KDM in their territory and manage budget planning and resource allocation effectively.

The MSL Manager hires, manages, coaches, and develops a group of MSLs to ensure high-quality scientific exchange in alignment with the Medical Affairs plan.

Conducting observational field visits to assess MSLs' scientific and soft skill acumen is also a critical aspect of this role.

The MSL Manager collates MSL field insights to be shared internally and provides input into the therapeutic area Medical strategy.

Ensuring adequate cross-functional collaboration between MSLs and internal stakeholders is essential for success in this role.

The MSL Manager organizes regular team meetings for training, best practices sharing, compliance reinforcement, and therapeutic area strategy discussion.

Developing and maintaining up-to-date scientific knowledge around relevant disease areas, products, and research methodologies is crucial for this position.

Requirements
  • A Master's degree or Ph.D. in life sciences, preferably with clinical knowledge of the assigned therapeutic area.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Industry experience in Medical Affairs is required, and therapeutic area experience is desirable.
  • Previous experience as an MSL is necessary.
  • Strong people management experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated project management and team leadership skills, listening, and coaching abilities are preferred.
  • Ability to translate scientific strategy into tactical and implementation plans.
  • Ability to create a working environment that fosters employee engagement.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and strong ethics and integrity are essential.
