About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Data Engineer to join our Crop Data Services team at Bayer. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and building scalable, efficient, and reliable data services and platforms that support our agricultural business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the design and development of our technical strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Author high-quality code to deliver new features, evolve existing ones, and fix defects, adhering to best practices and coding standards.
  • Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to define and refine solution requirements, ensuring a deep understanding of business needs.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the team, promoting a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Communicate technical principles, solutions, and recommendations effectively to business stakeholders, product managers, and other technical leaders.
  • Review code contributions from team members, providing constructive and actionable feedback to ensure high-quality code.
  • Collaborate with Principal Engineers and other engineering teams to ensure a cohesive and coherent architecture, driving technical excellence across the organization.
  • Work with leadership and teams to identify and evaluate impactful technologies that can enhance our problem-solving capabilities.
  • Mentor engineers, helping them develop their skills and become passionate experts in software development.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Deep knowledge of the Go programming language, with experience in building scalable and efficient data services.
  • Knowledge of key architectural patterns, such as microservices and event-driven architecture, with a deep understanding of their trade-offs.
  • Experience with utilizing data formats and interface description languages, such as Protobuf3.
  • Understanding of containerized applications and their lifecycle, with experience deploying software using Kubernetes.
  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes architecture and concepts, with direct experience deploying software using the Kubernetes control plane.
  • Knowledge of best practices for Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD).
  • Familiarity with Observability concepts, such as Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Indicators (SLIs), and related tooling.
  • Demonstrated experience as a productive reviewer of code, with an ability to coach others on code style and correctness.
  • Direct experience with relational databases and declarative query languages, such as SQL.
  • Knowledge of NoSQL databases, their query languages, and relevant data modeling techniques and design patterns.
  • Experience with the Git version control system and related tools, such as GitHub or GitLab.
  • Deep knowledge of public cloud concepts and infrastructure, with providers such as Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services.
  • Familiarity with publish/subscribe models and supporting technologies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (written and spoken).
  • Availability to work in a hybrid workplace, with some on-site workdays expected in São Paulo - SP.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with other object-oriented and functional programming languages.
  • Experience with geospatial data structures and algorithms.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Machine Learning and Generative AI concepts.
  • Experience building Kubernetes custom controllers and working with the Operator Pattern.
  • Knowledge of Google's Resource Oriented Design approach to API design.
  • Direct experience working with Apache Kafka for streaming data and message exchange.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Knowledge of the agricultural domain.
