Team Collaboration
At Wabtec, we are at the forefront of transitioning to low-carbon rail operations with FLXdrive — the world's first fully battery-electric, heavy-haul locomotive. Central to the FLXdrive system is our innovative liquid-cooled battery technology and proprietary thermal management system, designed to maximize energy output and extend battery life. You will collaborate with a skilled team focused on developing world-class energy storage solutions and their integration into these locomotives. An open mindset and effective communication with key stakeholders are essential for shaping product roadmaps, enhancing product competitiveness, and ensuring service readiness.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Engineer will take charge of creating the next generation of Energy Storage products tailored for locomotive and mining applications. The ideal candidate will possess experience in electromechanical systems and/or battery packaging. Responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with various subsystems and systems to establish requirements.
- Providing system-level packaging solutions and safety strategies.
- Working alongside customer-facing and sourcing teams to outline a roadmap for future battery technologies, services, and reliability support strategies.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Hands-on design experience.
- Ability to interpret and apply standards and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in battery packaging.
- Familiarity with electromechanical systems.
- Knowledge of Energy Storage safety standards and regulations.
- Experience with manufacturing processes and automation.
- Understanding of electrical and control systems.
- Strong grasp of material properties, sheet metal applications, and welding methodologies.
- Project Management experience.
- Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt certification.
Daily Activities
- Lead design and development initiatives for current products, including battery packs and thermal management systems.
- Serve as the Subject Matter Expert, providing technical leadership and mentoring junior team members.
- Drive project initiatives across a matrixed organization, ensuring effective communication of progress across all organizational levels.
- Develop long-term strategic partnerships with suppliers and industry groups.
- Collaborate with service and reliability teams to formulate customer support strategies and cost-effective reliability solutions.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings.
- Conduct detailed design analyses, including FEA, thermal models, bolted joints, tolerance stack-ups, and design reviews.
