Position Overview:
This role will oversee the construction operations within a data center campus.

The Construction Operations Manager for Latin America (LATAM) plays a crucial role within the Americas Construction team, focusing on leading, mentoring, and developing our construction personnel responsible for building data centers across the region.

You will guide a dynamic and innovative team tackling complex challenges in the construction of Amazon Data Centers.

Your responsibilities will include managing a proactive and skilled team, ensuring the timely delivery of data center capacity to support both existing and future Amazon operations in Latin America.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and cultivate new Construction Managers and Project Engineers. Provide coaching, mentorship, and leadership to a large construction management team.
  • Strategically manage construction capacity delivery within the designated region.
  • Collaborate with Finance to develop and execute capital budgets effectively.
  • Coordinate with various teams involved in data center development and launch.
  • Establish and oversee metrics to quantify performance in the region.
  • Work alongside Business Development on land and facility acquisitions.
  • Ensure safety, cost-effectiveness, and quality in the data center deliverables.

Travel Requirements:
Willingness to travel internationally up to 50-75% of the time is essential.

Essential Skills:

  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop team members.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to devise innovative solutions that minimize costs and timelines without compromising quality.
  • Experience in conducting comprehensive business case analyses to justify project scopes and present findings to management.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all phases of the data center construction lifecycle, from due diligence and budgeting to site selection, permitting, design review, daily oversight, and commissioning of completed facilities.
  • Engage directly with construction general contractors throughout pre-construction, bidding, award, execution, and project closeout phases.
  • Prepare Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and Scopes of Work (SOWs).
  • Conduct negotiations with general contractors and meticulously evaluate bids and proposals.
  • Perform financial analysis and reporting.
  • Manage construction projects aimed at enhancing the resilience of data centers.
  • Conduct constructability reviews of civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical designs for new or existing data centers.
  • Oversee construction document management, including submittal reviews, RFIs, change orders, and invoicing.
  • Ensure total project quality, assisting with commissioning and integrated system testing.
  • Simultaneously manage multiple regions and projects, including new data center constructions and capital improvements.
  • Support operational procedures for installed facilities, reviewing best practices and maintenance initiatives.
  • Document and report key construction metrics to team members and management.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for equipment failures.
  • Act as a leader within the team and among internal and external stakeholders supporting the data center.
  • Travel to construction sites across the Americas, including Canada, the US, and LATAM, to support new construction and product delivery.

Travel Requirements:
Must possess a valid passport and be able to obtain necessary visas for international project locations. Must also meet entry requirements for regions and countries outside of the assigned office location.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management, with experience in managing large, complex construction projects involving significant power distribution/generation systems and MEP plants.
  • Experience in general contractor and vendor management, including RFPs, bidding, change orders, and quality control.
  • Familiarity with building codes and regulations, including Life Safety, NETA, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Experience leading large contractor support teams.
  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining project schedules.
  • Advanced English proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of electrical engineering best practices.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles related to cooling systems.
  • Experience in the design or construction of data centers.
  • Familiarity with large-scale technical operations.
  • Experience with large-scale power systems.
