Protection and Border Security Officer

As a Protection and Border Security Officer, you will be part of an elite team dedicated to safeguarding America's borders and protecting the nation's economic prosperity.

  • You will enforce laws and regulations related to importing, exporting, and international shipping to and from the United States.
  • You will utilize intelligence techniques and behavior analysis to identify potential threats and perform risk assessments for violations of laws and threats to national security.
  • You will conduct interviews in a law enforcement capacity to gather information from suspected violators and determine the appropriate course of action.

This role requires the ability to make rapid, accurate judgments and decisions regarding the application of regulations, instructions, and procedures for importing and exporting merchandise. You must also have a strong understanding of laws relating to the right of persons to enter, reside in or depart from the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances.
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods, and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.
Benefits:
  • A fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to the starting salary.
  • This is a career ladder position with progression through GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, and GS-12.
  • Promotions occur at the discretion of the agency after 52 weeks in each grade.
Requirements:
  • Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
  • Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • Age restriction: Must be referred for selection before reaching the 40th birthday; exceptions for certain federal law enforcement positions.
