Organizational Context:
The AIM4Forests initiative focuses on harnessing technological advancements to generate data and insights that guide effective actions to mitigate deforestation and promote forest restoration. By leveraging innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, the program aims to empower countries, including Indigenous Peoples and local communities, to manage their forests effectively. The goal of Brazil's AIM4Forests work plan is to enhance the sustainability, accessibility, robustness, and transparency of forestry information.
Reporting Structure:
The selected candidate will report to the Assistant Representative in FAO Brazil – Programme.
Technical Focus:
The role involves supporting the BiomasBR Programme from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in developing methodologies for assessing the accuracy of the Programme's outputs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the INPE/BiomasBR coordinator and accuracy assessment focal point in creating a comprehensive technical report detailing the current methodology for evaluating the accuracy of PRODES, DETER, and TerraClass data across various Brazilian biomes.
- Collaborate with the INPE/BiomasBR team to identify technical gaps and propose improvements to the existing accuracy assessment methodology, considering the technical requirements of ART-TREES adopted by Amazonian States.
- Support the development of a concept note for a technical meeting focused on accuracy assessment methodologies, scheduled for 2025, outlining specific technical issues for discussion.
- Engage in additional tasks as needed and participate in relevant meetings as required.
Candidate Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in geography, forest sciences, environmental sciences, computing sciences applied to earth observation, or a related field.
- A minimum of five years of experience in land use/land cover data production, with a focus on accuracy assessment.
- Experience in handling large vector datasets, along with knowledge of land use, land use change, and forest geospatial datasets, as well as proficiency in Python.
- Fluency in English and Portuguese (level C).
- Brazilian nationality or legal authorization to work in Brazil.
