About the Role

We're seeking a seasoned Senior Backend Engineer to join our Global Bank Tribe at SumUp Inc. As a key member of our team, you'll play a pivotal role in building our very own digital bank, working closely with cross-functional teams to design and develop a unified global platform.

Key Responsibilities
  • Co-design and develop our global platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security for our expanding user base.
  • Design and implement REST APIs and build highly available event-driven systems.
  • Collaborate with global teams in Europe, the US, and Latin America to drive engineering initiatives and foster a strong, collaborative engineering culture.
  • Participate in the selection of new tools, technologies, and processes, and actively contribute to code reviews and pair programming.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, participating in product discussions to assist your team in delivering business value through best backend-related decisions.
  • Mentor fellow backend engineers, drive engineering initiatives, and adopt and actualize best practices with the team.
Requirements
  • Proven experience as a Senior Backend Engineer, proficient in Java and Kotlin.
  • Strong software architecture and application design skills, with a track record of making architectural decisions and a deep understanding of fundamental system architecture and API design.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and version control systems, demonstrating familiarity with DevOps practices.
  • Comfortable working with SQL databases and modern cloud technologies (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Passion for writing clear, concise, and testable code that your team can understand, maintain, and improve.
