Primary Purpose of the Position

The Upper School Choir Teacher inspires, educates, and guides students in developing their vocal abilities, musical literacy, and appreciation of choral music. The teacher directs choir ensembles, cultivates creativity and collaboration, and fosters excellence in performance while aligning with Graded's mission and values. The role includes preparing students for concerts, festivals, and special events, and engaging them in meaningful artistic experiences that build community and cultural understanding.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct and rehearse upper school choral ensembles, preparing students for school concerts, festivals, and community events.
  • Teach vocal techniques, sight-singing, music theory, and choral repertoire across diverse styles and traditions.
  • Differentiate instruction to support students with varying skill levels and musical backgrounds.
  • Cultivate a supportive, inclusive, and student-centered rehearsal environment that encourages risk-taking and collaboration.
  • Use diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to evaluate student progress, providing timely and constructive feedback.
  • Select and arrange repertoire that is engaging, challenging, and reflective of diverse cultures and musical traditions.
  • Collaborate with other music and arts faculty to align curriculum, foster interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and help support the annual musical production.
  • Organize, plan, and lead concerts, festivals, tours, and other public performances that showcase student growth and achievement.
  • Manage choral resources, including sheet music, sound equipment, and performance logistics.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues to support student success and program visibility.
  • Participate actively in professional learning, departmental meetings, and school-wide initiatives.

Certifications and Education - Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Choral Conducting, or related field.
  • Valid teaching certification/license (U.S. or internationally recognized equivalent).

Desired

  • Master's degree in Music Education, Choral Conducting, or related discipline.
  • Advanced training in vocal pedagogy, conducting, or music theory.

Experience - Required

  • Minimum of five years of teaching and conducting experience, preferably at the high school level.
  • Demonstrated success in directing choral ensembles and producing high-quality performances.

Desired

  • International school teaching experience or work in diverse educational settings.
  • Professional choral conducting or performance experience.
  • Experience preparing students for external festivals, competitions, or examinations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of vocal pedagogy, choral repertoire, and rehearsal techniques.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate students of varying abilities.
  • Excellent conducting, musicianship, and piano accompaniment skills.
  • Effective classroom and rehearsal management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with students, colleagues, and families.

Desired

  • Familiarity with international curricula (e.g., IB Music, AP Music Theory, or similar).
  • Proficiency with music technology tools for rehearsal and performance.
  • Ability to mentor students in solo and small ensemble performance.
