We're seeking a curious and competitive journalist to cover the Amazon rainforest and its influence on the global climate as a reporter based in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo or Brasília), Brazil. This is a temporary grant-funded position lasting through October 2026.

Responsibilities:
As part of the Climate and Environment team, this newsperson will cover many topics related to the Amazon, including but not limited to legal and illegal mining forest cutting, logging, fishing and raising of cattle, wildfires, changes in carbon dioxide emissions from deforestation, Indigenous peoples and others who live in the Amazon, government policies and enforcement, nongovernmental organizations and endemic species and habitats. The successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

We're Looking For Someone Who Will

  • work among a team of reporters and editors in the U.S. and around the world to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage related to myriad happenings in the Amazon.
  • have a demonstrated history of successful beat reporting, strong source development, storytelling on deadline and the production of explanatory stories that are illuminating and entertaining.
  • have the ability to both tell stories via phone reporting and willingness to travel to various locations in the Amazon.
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
  • pursue innovative storytelling techniques while maintaining AP's standards for integrity and objectivity.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, such as at least five years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
  • All applicants must have authorization to work in Brazil or be able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English and Portuguese. Knowledge of both Portuguese and Spanish is a plus.
  • Basic proficiency in using an iPhone for photos and video is required. Advanced proficiency is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.

Preferred Qualifications:
We're looking for a reporter who can consistently break news and deliver high-impact enterprise stories that appeal to AP's global audience. This role is for you if you are an idea machine, able to think creatively and critically, and are driven by curiosity. It is essential that you write clearly, concisely and conversationally. You should be able to develop a diverse range of sources who can provide AP with unique stories ahead of competing media outlets. You must be able to work effectively as a member of a team.
