About the role: We're looking for a Lead Engineer to guide the development of a collaborative discussion platform used in open-source and internal projects. This role involves designing and building key features to enhance community engagement, safety, scalability, and future commercial potential. You'll work closely with engineers and product managers to deliver impactful, forward-thinking solutions.
Responsibilities: Architect & Develop: Lead the technical design and architecture of new features for the company's iscussions, ensuring scalability, reliability, and seamless integration with existing systems. You will work across the full stack, with a focus on Ruby on Rails and JavaScript. Collaborative Leadership: Actively participate in all developer ceremonies, including sprint planning, retrospectives, standups, and other agile processes.
Drive the team to execute features iteratively, ensuring milestones are met and adjustments are made as needed. Ownership & Mentorship: Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship to the engineering team. Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Help guide junior and mid-level engineers in developing their skills and understanding of agile best practices. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the client's Product Owners and other stakeholders to align technical decisions with the product roadmap. Keep stakeholders informed with regular status updates, demos, and transparent progress reporting.
Drive Continuous Improvement: Own the roadmap for iterative improvement of the client's discussions, ensuring features are delivered in a way that optimizes performance, scalability, and user experience. Quality & Process: Ensure that all engineering work meets high standards of quality, from planning and development through to testing and production deployment. Coordinate with the team to identify and resolve blockers and streamline development processes.
Scalable Growth: Lead efforts to enhance the scalability and support of GitHub Discussions as it grows, including leveraging AI-powered solutions like CoPilot to help structure and analyze user contributions. Required skills: Strong experience with Ruby on Rails and JavaScript, with a solid understanding of full-stack web development. Proven track record in technical leadership, with experience architecting and scaling complex systems.
Deep understanding of agile methodologies and how to apply them effectively across teams, including sprint planning, retrospectives, and continuous delivery. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and other engineers. Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide engineers, helping them grow both technically and professionally.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, iterative development environment, balancing long-term vision with short-term deliverables. Experience with scalable and secure systems, particularly within community-driven products and large-scale applications Conditions: 100% Remote (overlap at least 5 hours with EST). Contractor role.
