Environment & Sustainability Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities) Main purpose of job:This is a challenging position within the Climate, Nature and Energy Team at the British Embassy in Brasilia.You'll manage UK-funded programmes focused on supporting Brazil's Green Energy Transition, especially on offshore wind, hydrogen, and biofuels.You will need to ensure all work is aligned with our wider interests on climate and nature, and the UK government's trade promotion objectives.You will also support on our energy diplomacy with Brazil; driving London's understanding of Brazil's energy priorities, contributing to briefing and supporting visits, events and missions.The successful candidate will ideally be based in Brasilia but we will also consider candidates based in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo.Roles and responsibilities:Programme:Manage UK PACT (currently six projects) UKSIP, MAF and other energy pillar projects, ensuring alignment with UK priorities and Brazilian needs.Coordinate with DESNZ, UNIDO, MDIC, MME, BNDES, and others to ensure effective implementation and legacy.Support the Energy Programme and Policy Manager as the focal point for Brazil Hubs country platforms.Ensure alignment with UK-Brazil Green and Inclusive Growth Partnership and across other International Climate Finance programmes in Brazil.Policy:Support the Energy Policy and Programme Manager in driving UK energy diplomacy with Brazil, including on networking and influencing.Assist on stakeholder mapping and building working level contacts in sub-national authorities (cities, states), representatives of academia, private sector and civil society.Monitor key policy developments related to the Energy Industry, and lead on knowledge management for the Energy pillar, contributing to briefings, core scripts and analysis.Support high-profile events and missions, e.g., London Climate Action Week, Energy Planning Summit, Cluster Twinning Visit, COP30, including supporting logistics, comms and reporting.Help implement the UK's COP30 strategy, working with the wider climate, political, trade, development and communications teams to deliver UK goals.Support Ministerial and official visits, including organising visit agendas, briefings and logistics as required.Corporate:Ensure our energy work is coherent and complimentary with our wider climate and nature work, as defined by the UK-Brazil Green & Inclusive Growth Partnership.Support the Energy Policy and Programme Manager to define and deliver energy-related Key Performance Indicators in the Country Business Plan and across the UK in Brazil Network's five priority Campaigns.Maintain strong networks in Government Departments in the UK (especially FCDO and DESNZ), and across the British diplomatic network in Brazil.Resources Managed:Guidance and mentee-ship to our three Climate Team interns on energy mattersLocal budget spend of some ~£40k (drawn from Climate/Nature Team budgets and project-specific budgets allocated by London)Programme management of the energy element of the £80m per year UK Government spend in Brazil, mostly via International Climate FinanceLearning and development opportunities:The job provides an excellent opportunity to acquire and/or deepen skills in programme management/coordination, in technical advice, and in policy influencing, including through exposure to senior levels of the Brazilian government, State governments, and within the relevant private sector and civil society.You will have access to learning and development opportunities through the FCDO's International Academy, as well as in the role.Essential qualifications, skills and experience Essential qualifications, skills and experience:Proven, high quality project management skills including managing budgets.Understanding of the Brazilian political framework on federal level.Excellent command of written and spoken English and Portuguese.Problem-solving, attention to detail.Demonstrable interpersonal and relationship skills, and the ability to influence others.Language requirements: Language: English and Portuguese Level of language required: Excellent English and Portuguese (spoken and written).Desirable qualifications, skills and experience Desirable skills / experience / qualifications:University degree in a related field (Economics, Energy, Climate and Environment Science, International Relations, Political Science, etc).Courses in project management.Some working experience/research with the agendas covered by the role on: national/state governments, international organisations, agencies and/or NGO's, or universities.Experience with international programmes and budget management.Some knowledge and understanding of Brazil's energy transition policies, its international climate commitments and institutional framework.Network of contacts in the Energy sector in Brazil.Previous event management experience.Required 6months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
