Software Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Linux KernelCanonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets.Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT.With more than 1,200 colleagues in over 75 countries, we are founder-led, profitable, and growing, while keeping most roles fully remote and distributed.We are hiring a Software Engineering Manager to lead technical teams responsible for the delivery and ongoing support of all Ubuntu Linux kernels.This role is ideal for an experienced manager or a highly proficient technical lead who is passionate about Linux and eager to take on a broader management responsibility.ResponsibilitiesLead a distributed team of software engineers in your geographic region, focusing on delivery of the Ubuntu Linux distribution.Own specific technical domains such as integration with silicon or cloud partners, hardware compatibility, quality control, security mitigation, and build / test automation.Engage with other Canonical teams, the open-source community, and commercial partners to align on strategy and execution.Facilitate technical delivery, coach engineers, positively influence culture, and drive continuous improvement.QualificationsSignificant programming experience in C; experience with Python, Golang, or similar languages is highly regarded.Substantial experience with operating system kernel internals; Linux experience is preferable but not required.Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers.Ability to coordinate across teams with differing technical focus.Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with Git.Experience with software packaging formats; direct Ubuntu / Debian / Snap experience is highly regarded.Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long.Nice-to-have skillsExperience with kernel patching and debugging.Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering.Solid background in driving CI / CD and process automation initiatives.Prior public involvement with an open-source project.What we offerCompetitive worldwide compensation, reviewed annually.Performance-driven annual bonus or commission.2,000 USD annual learning and development budget.Annual compensation review and recognition rewards.Annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave.Team Member Assistance Program & Wellness Platform.Opportunity to travel to new locations.Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events.About CanonicalCanonical is a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of the global move to open source.As the publisher of Ubuntu – one of the most important open-source projects – we shape the future of AI, IoT, and cloud computing.We recruit on a global basis, emphasise excellence, and create a workplace free from discrimination.We offer a distributed work environment with twice-yearly in-person team sprints.Employment detailsSeniority level : Mid-Senior levelEmployment type : Full-timeJob function : Engineering and Information TechnologyIndustries : Software Development#J-*****-Ljbffr
