We're seeking an accomplished Cloud Engineer to join our team in shaping and maintaining our serverless AWS backend.Your expertise will be pivotal in evolving our APIs, databases, and services that power payments, wallet, rewards, and near-real-time features.The role demands a high degree of technical proficiency across our event-driven, serverless stack.You'll work collaboratively with mobile/web teams to maintain and improve production systems, incorporating cutting-edge techniques and best practices.Your key responsibilities include:Maintaining and optimizing AWS Lambda microservices behind Amazon API Gateway (HTTP/REST & WebSocket) and AWS IoT Core; implementing authentication/authorization via Cognito User Pools (JWT) and Lambda authorizers for REST/HTTP.Maintaining and optimizing data models and access patterns in DynamoDB and MySQL (RDS); handling indexes, migrations, and query performance.Utilizing SQS/SNS for asynchronous workflows, ensuring idempotency, DLQs, retries, and healthy observability with CloudWatch metrics/logs and alarms.Maintaining and improving IaC (AWS SAM/CloudFormation), CI/CD pipelines, and environment promotions.Integrating and supporting third-party services used for payments, open banking, notifications, fraud/risk, analytics, and support tooling.Troubleshooting production issues, driving RCAs, and implementing preventive fixes and runbooks.Key qualifications include:8+ years building/maintaining production backends; 4+ years with AWS serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB).Proficiency in JavaScript/Node.js; strong REST API fundamentals and event-driven patterns.Solid SQL/NoSQL skills (schema design, indexing, query tuning).Experience maintaining IaC (SAM/CloudFormation) and CI/CD (Code Pipeline).Security-first mindset and practical debugging/troubleshooting chops (OWASP).WebSocket/API Gateway connection management and real-time features.Payments/fintech and fraud/risk integrations.Observability practices (dashboards, tracing, log correlation) and SLOs.About the roleThis is a remote-first position within the UK time zone, with a startup-paced environment offering high ownership.We prioritize clean code, small safe changes, and excellent operability.Hiring processIntro callTechnical deep-dive (systems design discussions focused on maintainability and evolution)Practical walkthrough (IaC/API/data-modeling maintenance scenario)Founder/lead chat & referencesEQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYERWe welcome every background and perspective.To applyPlease send your CV, GitHub/portfolio, and a brief note describing a production backend you maintained/evolved and the reliability or cost improvements you delivered.
