Job Introduction

BBC World Service is an international multimedia broadcaster, part of BBC News, delivering a wide range of language and regional services and working increasingly with other parts of BBC News to serve global audiences. It uses multiple platforms to reach its weekly audience of 320 million globally, including TV, digital platforms including social media, AM, FM, shortwave, digital satellite and cable channels. As part of an historic and exciting expansion of the Americas region, the BBC World Service is expanding its language services serving audiences in BBCMundo and BBCBrasil. The expanded language will work closely and collaboratively with all teams in their overseas bureaux (Miami, Sao Paulo) and with teams in the BBC’s headquarters in London to deliver the best service for BBC audiences.

Both BBC Mundo and BBC Brazil Services aim to make international news relevant to the Americas audience and have an increasing focus on local stories that are relevant across the continent and the world. Both are multimedia services with a focus on text and video, and plans to further explore interactivity and other new digital formats. Together the two services reach an audience of around 40 million unique users monthly.

We are looking for a Journalist with a keen interest in social media and motivated by a desire to assist and help multiple and diverse teams in their daily operations and raise the bar when it comes to social. You will be a self-starter, quick-learning, resilient, persistent, and enthusiastic individual with great organizational and communication skills. You will be a team player, flexible, and prompt to use insights from social media metrics and social listening to provide actionable measures to improve engagement, reach, and overall performance

Main Responsibilities

Overall purpose of the job / Role responsibility

The role will be responsible for supporting the management of the Brazilian Service's social media tools, including but not limited to providing access, support and relevant training as required; helping with the central admin of social media platforms, assisting the Social Media Team in daily tasks, contributing with ideas for stories and strategic projects, and providing administrative support to the Digital Development team.

You will be a self-starter, quick-learning, resilient, persistent and enthusiastic individual with great organisational and communication skills. You will be a team player, flexible and used to working with different teams and projects simultaneously, and not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone to come forward with ideas.

Main duties

To help manage social media platforms, including programming posts, reposts, moderating comments and replying to users emails, editing content for impact in different platforms (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube etc.) Manage and grow online communities, fostering meaningful conversations and ensuring active engagement Monitor and analyze social media metrics, providing actionable insights to improve engagement, reach, and overall performance To support our Social Media Newsgathering effort identifying in users' comments and feedback ideas for stories that could be pursued by the Journalism Coordinator or others in the team To take part in the demo/trial of new social media tools To report bugs and other issues affecting publishing to third-party platforms using established internal and external procedures Stay updated on the latest social media trends, tools, and algorithm changes to ensure the most effective strategies are employed To identify and contribute to the Social Media team plans and projects with ideas and actionable suggestions To assist the Social Media team and wider Digital Development team with day-to-day logistical and coordination tasks, as required

Are you the Right Candidate?

A keen interest in understanding their inner works and some experience in managing social accounts Capacity to analyze and interpret social media metrics (e.g., engagement rates, reach, impressions) and using data to inform strategy Experience in managing online communities and nurturing relationships to foster loyalty and interaction Basic to intermediate knowledge of SEO, with the ability to apply SEO best practices in content creation and social media management. Excellent Portuguese writing skills and an understanding of language use for social media Basic picture editing skills and a keen eye for good images in the context of journalistic social media The ability and interest to work with different teams and adapt to diverse challenges Excellent organizational skills, the ability to apply to tasks with discipline and efficiency The ability to plan and use time and resources effectively, and the drive to carry tasks to conclusion Excellent relationship and communications skills Comfortable working on their own, as well as excellent team player Must be able to work well and calmly in a fluid newsroom environment Familiar with BBC Editorial Guidelines, and specifically those related to BBC social activity An understanding of the priorities in Digital for World Service Languages Experience in creating and delivering training an advantage
