Job Responsibilities
The Principal Enterprise Architect is responsible for shaping and governing the overall enterprise technology architecture within Syneos Health. Operating as part of a team of Principal Architects under the Director of Enterprise Architecture, this role collaborates with peers to ensure a unified architecture strategy across the company.
The Principal Enterprise Architect focuses on technology governance, strategic alignment, architectural oversight, and systems planning and rationalization – ensuring that IT solutions and system landscapes meet business needs, adhere to standards, and are aligned with the organization's goals. The role emphasizes maintaining a stable, secure, scalable architecture through strong governance (e.g. leading architecture review processes, driving, facilitating and enforcing cross-functional architecture standards) while providing guidance to projects. The Principal Enterprise Architect works closely with business and IT leaders and other stakeholders to align architecture to business strategy. Success in this role is measured by the consistency and efficiency of technology solutions, the effectiveness of architecture governance, the degree to which IT initiatives support the business objectives, and ability to express and rationalize systems landscapes. This position reports to the Director of Enterprise Architecture.
Core Responsibilities
  • Technology Governance & Standards: Drive robust architecture governance across IT functions, projects and systems. Drive, facilitate and enforce enterprise-wide standards, best practices, and principles for technology solutions.
    • Manage and chair the Architecture Review Board to evaluate proposed solutions for alignment with standards and the enterprise roadmap. Ensure that projects undergo proper architecture reviews and approvals, and that any exceptions are justified and documented. Track resolution to follow up items.
    • Drive stakeholder engagement and continuous improvement to architecture review processes to ensure architecture quality, maintainability, cost effectiveness, risk management, streamline approvals and improve stakeholder satisfaction / reduce friction.
    • Champion the continuous improvement of architecture practices and processes. Refine the enterprise architecture methodology, tools, and governance workflows to be more efficient and "adaptive" without compromising on quality.
  • Align Business & IT Strategy: Link the organization's business mission and processes to its IT strategy, ensuring that current and future technology needs are met in a sustainable and adaptable manner
    • Develop and maintain architecture models and roadmaps that illustrate how the CRO's strategic goals (e.g. efficient clinical trial operations, data-driven decision making) are supported by technology.
    • Continuously update the enterprise architecture blueprint to reflect evolving business priorities and industry practices.
  • Enterprise Architecture Development: Align the technology strategy and target architecture for assigned domain areas within the enterprise. Create future-state architecture visions and multi-year roadmaps that guide technology investments and system implementations.
  • Portfolio Rationalization: Oversee the application portfolio for the assigned domain and identify opportunities to simplify and consolidate systems. Work with IT and business stakeholders to eliminate redundant applications and drive application rationalization efforts, reducing complexity and cost. Ensure new projects do not duplicate existing functionality or introduce incompatible technologies.
  • Solution Oversight & Guidance: Provide high-level architectural oversight on complex projects.
    • Guide solution architects and project teams to ensure their designs adhere to enterprise standards, integrate well with existing systems and factor in cross-project dependencies.
    • Act as an "EA Buddy" to project teams – engaging early in projects to mentor solution architects through architecture planning and the ARB process/
  • Engage Stakeholders: Regularly meet with stakeholders to gather input, provide updates on architecture plans, and ensure that IT initiatives are meeting business and research needs. Foster strong relationships with project managers, engineers, and infrastructure teams so that architecture considerations are embedded into project lifecycles.
  • Stay informed about relevant technology trends (e.g. cloud services, artificial intelligence, data integration techniques, digital trial tools) to keep the architecture function responsive to business changes and technological advancements, with a measured and compliant approach.
Qualifications
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent (required).
Additional Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in enterprise architecture, systems design, or related IT leadership roles (required). This includes a proven track record in designing and governing complex technology ecosystems and leading architecture efforts.
  • Experience within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or clinical research industry is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of enterprise architecture modeling tools (e.g. LeanIX), frameworks and methodologies (e.g. TOGAF) desired.
  • Experience running or contributing to an architecture review board or similar governance body is strongly preferred. The candidate should have a track record of guiding teams to follow established standards and making balanced decisions when exceptions are needed. An eye for consistency and reusability in technology solutions and meticulous attention to detail and follow through are critical.
  • Proficiency in creating architecture artifacts (principles, standards, models, roadmaps) and using architecture tools to document current and target states is expected.
  • Technical Breadth: Broad understanding of enterprise technologies and integration approaches required.
