The Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital has been helping patients recover from complex medical conditions and injuries since 2000. The first long-term acute-care hospital (LTACH) in the region, we help patients who are too medically fragile to transfer to a skilled nursing facility, acute rehabilitation hospital or their home after a hospital stay. In addition to general rehabilitation, our team is renowned for their expertise in ventilator weaning and respiratory care.

JOB SUMMARY

Is accountable for the delivery of nursing and patient care services; acts as a clinical and administrative resource during off-hour, weekend and holiday shifts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. MONITOR QUALITY CLINICAL PRACTICE AND PATIENT CARE SERVICE DELIVERY
    1. By assessing patient status, identifying unstable medical conditions and taking appropriate action.
    2. By directing the delivery of competent age specific nursing care to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
    3. By validating that care is consistent with the medical regimen, rehabilitation team goals, the nursing plan of care and age of the patient.
    4. By maintaining a safe physical environment conducive to the delivery of health care services.
    5. By conducting rounds on all units to assess patient care needs.
    6. By maintaining a patient focused care environment within the philosophy of Good Shepherd and the Patients Bill of Rights.
    7. By representing GOOD SHEPHERD services, philosophy and quality to external customers.
    8. Supervises respiratory staff and assigns work as indicated during off-hour, weekend and holiday shifts.
  2. DEMONSTRATES FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY
    1. By effectively assigning staff to meet the needs of patients.
    2. By providing supplies, equipment, medication, and transport services for patients as needed.
    3. By identifying and providing input to Nurse Managers on work methods that reduce the cost and/or time required to deliver patient care.
    4. By developing an environment conducive to effective time management for all nursing staff.
    5. By monitoring budget variances in collaboration with Nurse Managers and assisting with implementing corrective actions and employs conflict resolution techniques.
  3. DIRECT STAFF TO ACCOMPLISH STAFF JOB RESULTS
    1. By translating institutional goals, values and objectives to staff and others.
    2. By establishing and supporting the attainment of hospital and departmental goals.
    3. By assisting the Nurse Managers and Program Directors in effective communication among team members.
    4. By identifying areas for performance improvement, measuring data, instituting corrective action plans and evaluating results.
    5. By assuring that non-licensed personnel have achieved competency to carry out their delegated roles and responsibilities.
    6. By effectively counseling and educating individuals whose performance does not meet standards.
    7. By acknowledging performance excellence.
    8. By coaching and mentoring licensed personnel to develop skills and perform expertly in their roles.
    9. By providing a supportive environment for affiliating students' learning experiences.
    10. By assuring compliance with orientation and continuing education requirements of the nursing department and institution.
    11. By monitoring and managing group dynamics to facilitate team building.
    12. By objectively assessing the performance of designated associates on an annual basis.
    13. By orienting and evaluating the competency of agency, float, resource pool and/or per diem associates or delegating the responsibility to an appropriate individual.
  4. MAINTAINS SAFE AND HEALTHY WORK ENVIRONMENT
    1. By maintaining compliance with professional, regulatory and governmental standards of care.
    2. By applying quality improvement techniques to improve deficiencies.
    3. By reviewing and revising policies, procedures and standards of care including appropriate references.
    4. By demonstrating knowledge of responsibilities in an emergency situation and conducting drills (Code Blue, Fire, Internal Disaster, Bomb Threat, Priority Alert).
    5. By responding to visitor injuries if the Employee Health Nurse is unavailable.
  5. CONTRIBUTES TO TEAM EFFORT
    1. By developing channels of communication which will enhance working relations and service delivery between nursing shifts, units and hospitals.
    2. By establishing cooperative, collaborative relationships among disciplines and departments.
    3. By communicating effectively with the Nursing Management Team.
    4. Attends leadership meetings.
  6. ASSURES COMMUNICATION OF SHIFT EVENTS
    1. By preparing a clinical and management report at the end of each shift.
    2. By completing a Supervisor's Shift Report for the Administrator/Nurse Executive.
    3. By analyzing and routing IIRs and MITs per policy.
  7. DEMONSTRATES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    1. By remaining current in nursing and management knowledge and skills.
    2. By maintaining active membership in professional organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Associate's Degree in Nursing required

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred

Work Experience

2-4 years as a rehab staff nurse required

Prior supervisory experience preferred

Licenses / Certifications

Registered Nurse license required

Basic Life Support / CPR, as a healthcare provider, per the American Heart Association required

Certification in Rehabilitation Nursing preferred (must be acquired within 3 years of supervision)
