Project Design Mechanical Engineer, Fleet Remediation Engineering - EMEA

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

Amazon's vision is to be the world's most customer-centric company, and this role is key to delivering that vision. The Fleet Remediation Engineering (FRE) team delivers designs that support our operational data centers to meet ever-evolving customer needs as we continue to scale our fleet.

As Project Design Mechanical Engineer, you will lead design projects in operational Data Centers that remediate emergent issues, upgrade existing infrastructure, and add new services. You will provide lifecycle support from design through to implementation - working closely with stakeholders to deliver projects on schedule and to budget.

You will use your mechanical expertise to:

  1. Own the design for data center projects and design solutions which add infrastructure, capacity, improve availability, and/or increase sustainability.
  2. Perform design and equipment submittal review for Data Centers in your region.
  3. Interface with internal and external data center design engineering teams, server hardware team, environmental health and safety team, field engineering, and controls engineering to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in services delivered.
  4. Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  5. Develop into a technical subject matter expert.
  6. Support construction, commissioning, operations, and turnover.

Our Design Engineers:

  • Use their engineering judgment to provide design decisions and recommendations despite uncertainty.
  • Are detail and data-oriented.
  • Are familiar with design/construction standards & processes.
  • Have experience managing engineering projects and engineering consultants.
  • Can build trust and relationships with different stakeholders (e.g., Operations, Commissioning, Construction, and Design).
  • Can prepare and present progress reports to relevant stakeholders.
  • Are comfortable working on live sites as and when required.
  • Can effectively prioritize.

Key job responsibilities:

  1. Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.
  2. Carry out designs & calculations to meet project requirements.
  3. Manage design consultancy firms to generate, review, and release data center designs.
  4. Manage change, versioning, and configuration control.
  5. Draft and approval of project scopes, request for proposals (RFP), and request for information (RFI).
  6. Work with commissioning teams to validate installation, operation, and performance of systems.
  7. Travel for site review and conduct engineering evaluations, audits, and site launches.
  8. Review and approve equipment submittals.
  9. Work with internal teams to troubleshoot problems and conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Action (CA) for design-related problems.
  10. Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify the appropriate mechanical equipment.
  11. Provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
  12. Offer creative, out-of-the-box solutions.
  13. Up to 30% travel in region (Europe, Middle East & Africa).

About the team:

Each day you will interact with different teams responsible for various aspects of the data centers. You will prioritize your activities to support data center safety, remediation projects, capacity, and availability, focusing on the actions that are most impactful. You will have the opportunity to work on projects locally and globally.

Our team has a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. We are keen and deliberate in supporting new team members, with a tailored onboarding process to set you up for success.
