Engineering Manager, Ubuntu Desktop Gaming - Porto Alegre / RS
  • Our goal is to enable game ecosystems like Steam, and individual game publishers, to be confident they can deliver outstanding gameplay on Ubuntu - in fact, the best gameplay possible on your hardware.
  • As part of that, we are hiring a manager to lead the team.
  • We are in an exciting time for gaming on Linux.
  • Compatibility tools like Proton have matured, and many native Windows titles "just work" today, massively expanding the gaming catalog available on Linux.
  • Delivering a well-rounded gaming experience involves more than just compatibility; it includes maximizing performance across hardware, ensuring anti-cheat mechanisms are robust and secure, facilitating access to content creation tools, driver management, HUD overlays, and supporting game controllers, headsets, RGB keyboards, and gaming mice.
  • We aim to create a platform that makes it easy for players to find games, use their devices, and share experiences with friends.
  • In this role, you will work with open source projects like Proton and partners such as Unity to improve the gaming experience for Ubuntu users and the broader Linux gaming ecosystem.
  • As an engineering manager at Canonical, you must be technically strong, with responsibilities to run an effective team and develop your colleagues.
  • You will help team members grow, perform important work, achieve professional and personal satisfaction, and collaborate effectively with colleagues and the community.
  • Technical leadership and a background in software engineering are prerequisites.
  • You will lead, challenge, and develop engineers, influence the culture positively, facilitate technical delivery, and work on strategy and execution with your team.
  • What you'll do :
    1. Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers
    2. Coach, mentor, and provide hands-on guidance for career development
    3. Demonstrate sound engineering principles
    4. Help determine the product roadmap through insights, estimation, and execution
    5. Set and manage expectations with teams, management, and stakeholders
    6. Advocate for and implement modern, agile development practices
    7. Develop and promote excellent engineering and organizational practices
    8. Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
    9. Participate actively in leadership and collaborate across the organization
    10. Work remotely with global travel twice a year for company events, each lasting up to two weeks
  • Valued skills and experience :
    1. Experience leading distributed teams to deliver features
    2. Ideally, experience with DevOps and running production services at scale
    3. Experience working in an agile environment
    4. Proven ability to develop and grow people
    5. Passion for software development and Linux gaming technologies
    6. Firsthand gaming experience on Linux, understanding user challenges
    7. Knowledge of the Linux gaming technology landscape
    8. Ideas on how Ubuntu can positively impact Linux gaming
