Marine Underwriter

Key Responsibilities Underwrite both treaty and single risks within the Marine sector. This encompasses risk assessment, pricing, and negotiating with clients. Support portfolio management by seeking new business opportunities and monitoring the ongoing development of the portfolio. Maintain a close relationship with the Munich headquarters to ensure adherence to Group guidelines, strategic direction, and profitability standards. Foster collaboration with local internal stakeholders, including the Claims and Back Office departments, to sustain and grow a profitable portfolio. Underwrite both new and renewal Marine reinsurance business, covering all aspects of risk and coverage analysis, pricing, and negotiation of terms and conditions. Work to elevate Munich Re’s profile throughout the LATAM market. Closely monitor treaty and facultative risk performance within the portfolio by analysing both internal and external data to ensure expected profitability, taking necessary measures when required. Drive the development of both traditional and non-traditional reinsurance solutions by maintaining close contact with clients, brokers, and risk management companies to understand market needs. Support the development and implementation of the Company’s strategy for Marine business across the Latin American region. Monitor ongoing market developments and maintain regular communication with clients on Marine-related matters, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams and other internal stakeholders as needed. Work alongside international colleagues within the marine hubs to expand the range of products, solutions, and services Munich Re can offer its clients. Represent Munich Re at industry conferences, client seminars, and market events as a subject-matter expert in Marine reinsurance. Deliver presentations and foster thought leadership within the market. Contribute to the development of Munich Re’s brand positioning and knowledge-sharing initiatives by preparing articles, presentations, and internal/external communications on Marine insurance topics. Collaborate with Business Development and Communications teams to identify opportunities for strategic visibility and engagement with key stakeholders. Support innovation by identifying opportunities to integrate emerging trends into underwriting processes and client solutions. Your Profile Bachelor’s degree. At least 3–5 years of relevant underwriting experience; marine sector knowledge is considered an advantage. Solid understanding of the LATAM marine market’s operations. Expertise in structuring and pricing reinsurance programmes. Excellent written and spoken communication skills in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, reflecting the international scope of the position. Proven history of effective teamwork and interface management. Confident and engaging demeanour, with strong negotiation skills and a client-focused approach. High level of commitment to the role and willingness to travel as required. Strong presentation and public-speaking skills, with the ability to represent Munich Re confidently in client and market forums. Strategic mindset with the ability to identify long-term market trends and translate them into actionable underwriting or business initiatives. Analytical and data-driven approach combined with commercial acumen to balance profitability and growth.
