Performs a range of unskilled manual to skilled work in the maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles, and light and heavy equipment. Performs responsible and specialized skilled mechanical work to automotive and specialized equipment. Work includes diagnosing and performing minor and major repairs and performing preventive maintenance on a wide variety of automotive and heavy equipment. The work requires operation of various test equipment and hand tools in order to support the work activities. Work includes completing maintenance records, ordering parts, repair of gasoline and diesel engines, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, tires, and heating and cooling systems. The employee is subject to standby and call back work. The employee is also subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Public Works/Facilities.
Key Responsibilities:- Diagnoses highly complex mechanical problems.
- Insures completed work is in compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Performs a variety of skilled mechanical repairs on vehicles, engines, generators, and heavy equipment.
- Coordinates and performs regular maintenance on the County’s fleet of vehicles; such as tune-ups, checking lights, tires, oil changes, brakes, wiper blades, horns, suspension, etc.
- Operates equipment such as jacks, refrigerant recovery machines, vehicle lifts, tire changer and balancer, air guns, battery charger, wrenches, air compressor, welder, and other hand tools.
- Conducts inventory and replenishes materials and supplies.
- Tests electrical systems to assure proper functioning.
- Removes, replaces and reassembles transmissions; clutches; fuel and fuel lines, oil, and water pumps; alternators and other parts of the engine.
- Performs North Carolina Vehicle Inspections.
- Performs general mechanical work as needed and acquires estimates for outside work.
- Performs other job duties as directed.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and parts and equipment used in the repair of automotive cars, trucks, some heavy equipment, and public safety equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.
- Thorough knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, vacuum, and brake systems.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions.
- Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts.
- Ability to read and understand service manuals and schematic drawings.
- Ability to operate vehicles safely.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
- Ability to establish and maintain records of work activities and parts.
- Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in mechanical trade skills and journeyman level mechanic experience repairing automotive equipment; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
- Obtain and hold NC Department of Motor Vehicles license for performing NC State Vehicle Inspections.
