Kantar Media is the leader in providing audience and advertising measurement tools and intelligence. With a proven track record in audience research services across 50+ countries, Kantar Media is at the forefront of technological developments in audience measurement in the media industry, working with broadcasters and advertisers, media agencies and industry committees.

There are 2 main areas of Data Science in Kantar Media, the main data science team provides research and technical expertise, support, oversight, and methodological development to our global products and services and sits within the [Market] Research and Data Sciences Department. The Operations Data Science roles works closely with the main data science team and specialise in delivering support to the global operations function. The group forms part of the Operations Systems and Strategy Department. This role is in the Operations Data Science area and will initially report to the Automation Lead.


About the Project/Role

Kantar Media produces a set of high-quality syndicated data reports for clients that are gathered and prepared by a combination of hardware, software, and operations teams. These teams of operators work to deliver fast and accurate interpretation and analysis of the world’s media consumption on a daily/weekly/monthly cadence. The role is to apply the latest data science techniques to improve/automate the software and systems used by this process and these operators to both save on costs and amplify the operator quality/capability. The project backlog currently covers CV, Object Detection, Visual Segmentation, OCR, NLP, Transcription, Translation, time-series, graph, and classification-based algorithms, and will include LLM based approaches from Q3 2023.

There will be 2 main business approaches being targeted:

  • Producing the same output with fewer resources
  • Producing better/more extensive output with the same resources

The key area of focus for the role is the development and improvement of machine learning, mathematical, and statistical models leveraging sample data, known models, subject matter expertise and best practice. The targets for research and testing will be determined in an agile manner and be integrated with the wider IT and Ops processes. For this reason, the role is co-located with the IT teams that support the software development.


Responsibilities

  • Apply suitable machine learning, mathematical and statistical algorithms, pre-trained/fine-tuned models and enhance or create new algorithms as necessary to achieve the goals following one or more of the approaches previously mentioned.
  • Interact with other members of the automation team and wider data science team, locally and globally, in the definition, improvement and implementation of data processing algorithms and strategies.
  • Take ownership of the problems and solutions from a data science point of view and represent those data driven solutions to the automation team and optionally to stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Recommend sources of data and work with the automation team, BA team, SMEs & IT to get representative samples.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis and support development of the project business case as required.
  • Participating in team knowledge sharing and presentations.
  • Contribute to and import new and necessary data modelling and methodology approaches, by initial prototyping and testing in the project contexto.
  • Provide support for the phases of IT integration of the data driven projects by proposing key metrics and assisting with the evaluation of model and algorithmic performance in acceptance testing and production cycles.


Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Commercial experience of at least one form of Computer Vision, NLP, or non-trivial recognition/classification problem.
  • Very strong mathematical and statistical skills, and with a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of ML/AI algorithms.
  • Programming and data analysis experience in Python and its commonly used data science libraries.
  • Skilled in working with large and complex datasets with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Written and spoken English.


Optional Extras

  • Cloud experience with data science IDEs/tools (e.g., DataBricks) and MLOps exposure.
  • Direct experience of solving video/image/audio processing problems at scale
  • Basic Spanish.


Education and Experience

  • A Postgraduate/Batchelor’s degree in a quantitative, mathematical, or scientific discipline.
  • Sufficient experience in a commercial and data science setting.
