Position Summary:

Our partner is a mature SaaS company in the midst of a large-scale platform modernization. As part of their long-term strategy, they're consolidating several legacy systems into a unified, cloud-native architecture hosted on AWS. To make this happen, they're seeking a database engineer to own the design and execution of data migration pipelines across a mix of source systems (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and one in flux) into a Microsoft SQL Server target environment running on EC2. This isn't operational DBA work, it's focused, heads-down engineering: writing performant scripts, optimizing stored procedures, building repeatable migration logic, and handling transformation, cleansing, and validation at scale. You will collaborate directly with full-stack teammates, QA, and legacy system SMEs to plan and execute end-to-end transfers, all while preserving data fidelity and system stability. This is a build-and-ship role, ideal for someone who understands that well-structured data movement is foundational to scalable product delivery and wants to own that process from source to destination.

Experience and Education:

  • 5+ years of experience in data migration, database engineering, or related roles involving structured data movement and transformation
  • Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server environments hosted in cloud VMs
  • Exposure to large-scale data cleansing and mapping efforts
  • Experience writing stored procedures and custom scripts for data transformation
  • Experience working in agile engineering teams and feature pods

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute data migrations from multiple legacy systems to a new platform
  • Write custom SQL scripts, stored procedures, and transformation logic
  • Collaborate with product owners and engineers to understand data mapping rules
  • Build repeatable migration processes with clear rollback strategies
  • Analyze source data for quality issues and handle cleansing tasks as needed
  • Own the flow of structured data from Postgres, SQL Server, and unknown sources into target SQL Server
  • Validate data transfers with test plans and exception handling
  • Optimize migration scripts for performance and error detection
  • Document mappings, process steps, and edge cases clearly
  • Partner with QA to verify completeness and accuracy of migrated records
  • Coordinate with legacy system SMEs to clarify field definitions and logic
  • Ensure platform integrity during data ingestion
  • Track migration progress and raise risks early
  • Share best practices with peers working on related backend services
