Job Description:

As a Veterinary Medical Officer, you will be working within an assigned geographic area to promote animal health through disease detection and diagnosis. Your work may affect state-federal disease control programs nationwide.

  • Supervise subordinates and monitor work, providing advice, evaluating performance, initiating awards, and authorizing leave approval.
  • Develop and revise medical, program, and inspection procedures to handle animals exposed to contagious diseases.
  • Inspect animals for evidence of disease conditions, assess health status, diagnose clinical symptoms, advise treatment options, and recommend preventive care.
  • Inspect facilities and records for compliance with federal laws related to animal health and welfare.
  • Certify the health of animals and their by-products for export to other countries.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal officials on animal health and welfare oversight.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • US Citizenship or Nationality required.
  • Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Background investigation and/or fingerprint check clearance.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period.
  • Direct Deposit: Federal payments must be made by direct deposit.
  • E-Verify employment verification check successful.
  • Continuous Vetting enrollment as a USDA employee.
  • Unscheduled overnight details in event of animal health emergencies.
  • Travel and work both in and outside of the United States required.
  • Obtaining an Official Government Passport for foreign travel.
