Animal Laboratory Specialist Position

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Animal Laboratory Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and distributing enrichment items for various species, including nonhuman primates, pigs, rabbits, and ferrets.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in animal care and research support. They will also be able to follow detailed instructions, maintain a high standard of cleanliness and care, and lift/move equipment as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and distribute all enrichment items for a variety of species.
  • Rotate novel enrichment devices to ensure animals receive a varied and stimulating environment.
  • Develop comprehensive monthly enrichment calendars and submit them for review and implementation.
  • Provide covered species with human interactive enrichment.
  • Maintain inventory of produce and prepare daily produce.
  • Maintain inventory of enrichment devices.
  • Basic understanding of species-specific behavior.
  • Provide ferrets with exercise/playtime.
  • Rotate rabbits onto floor and provide them with extra enrichment and possibly cleaning these runs if necessary.
  • Prepare non-human primate enclosures and ensure the addition of clean enrichment following enclosure sanitation.
  • Design, construct, and/or assemble enrichment devices for all species in conjunction with a behaviorist.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be able to follow detailed instructions and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and care.
  • Strong interest in animal care and research support.
  • Ability to lift/move equipment and perform physically active duties throughout the day.
  • Willingness to learn and pursue AALAS certification.
