Medical Laboratory Professional

A medical laboratory professional is responsible for preparing patient samples, including grossing, tissue processing, tissue sectioning, and routine staining.

  • Prepares patient samples by performing grossing, tissue processing, tissue sectioning, and routine staining.
  • Performs immunohistochemical staining of tissue sections using automated immuno-stainers.
  • Performs whole slide imaging of stained slides using automated slide scanners.
  • Maintains minor equipment, performs troubleshooting, and ensures a clean and organized work area.
  • Ensures safety in the histology laboratory by adhering to regulatory guidelines.
  • Handles and disposes of sharps containers and biohazardous lab waste properly.
  • Adheres to CAP, CLIA, and NYS regulations.
  • Completes instrument maintenance logs and provides Quality Department with required performance metrics.

Requirements:

  • 5-7 years of histology experience within an anatomic pathology laboratory; supervisory experience preferred.
  • Significant Histology and IHC experience required in a clinical laboratory; prior experience using Imaging platforms is a plus.
  • Preferred certification as ASCP QIHC.
  • Self-motivated, able to manage time effectively, and effective communication with colleagues and management.
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing workloads to meet required turnaround times.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Meet the requirements of CLIA-88 (42 CFR).
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in life sciences or equivalent histology qualification, e.g. HT or HTL.
  • Anatomic or clinical pathology degree is a plus.
