Database Reliability Engineer Role

The lead of our database reliability team is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of our databases. This involves coordinating team activities, tracking and reporting achievements, defining and documenting processes, and troubleshooting escalated issues. This role requires a hands-on approach to database monitoring, performance tuning, backup and recovery, installation, maintenance, and disaster recovery.
This position works closely with engineering teams to coordinate and manage code changes and deployments to ensure ongoing availability and reliability. Collaboration with Engineering, Data & Analytics, DevOps, and Architecture teams is also essential in improving performance and building a reliable infrastructure that meets business requirements.
- Database software and infrastructure setup, installation, configuration, and management are key responsibilities of this role.
- Working with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of code changes.
- Developing and implementing database policies and procedures to ensure data integrity and availability.
- Troubleshooting, solving, and communicating database problems and failures.
- Staying up-to-date with industry developments to explore potential advantages for our customers.
- At least 5 years of experience in database engineering or administration roles.
- Extensive experience with AWS services, including design, deployment, and management of highly available database workloads using RDS and EC2 instances.
- Deep knowledge of relational databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQL Server, as well as distributed databases like Cassandra, CockroachDB, and Amazon Aurora.
- Proficiency in database internals, query planners, replication, and sharding techniques.
- Experience with infrastructure management tools like Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, Liquibase, and Flyway.
- Strong programming skills in languages like Python, Go, or Bash.
- Familiarity with SRE practices and observability tools.
- Knowledge of the development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
