Medical Director Job Description

The Medical Director serves as the chief clinical leader for transfusion medicine and blood banking services. This role is responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and compliance of activities related to blood collection, processing, testing, storage, and distribution.


Responsibilities:
  • Provide oversight to maintain high standards of medical care, donor eligibility, and blood product safety across operations in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Review and approve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), validations, reports, and donor records; supervise Immunohematology Reference Laboratory operations.
  • Advise internal teams on complex medical decisions, donor reactions, transfusion events, and non-conforming products.
  • Stay current with scientific developments to advise leadership, support innovation, manage risks, and drive strategic planning and policy development.
  • Develop and support education for staff, fellows, technologists, and partner institutions; participate in external education, assessment teams, and professional forums.
  • Represent the organization at conferences, on advisory boards, and in community outreach efforts aligned with the mission.
  • Collaborate in budget development and financial planning for medical and quality services; evaluate cost-effectiveness and ensure responsible stewardship of resources.

Requirements:

A Medical Degree (D.O. or M.D.) with Board Certification in Clinical Pathology, Internal Medicine, or Hematology is required. Board Eligibility or Certification in Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking is also required.


Minimum 5-7 years of experience in healthcare/medical fields with a concentration in blood banking is required. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a regulatory environment is essential. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and related applications is also required.


Medical licensure in PA and NJ is required. Flexible and adaptable to evolving job responsibilities and workplace needs is necessary. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required for collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.


Ability to travel (10%+) to support collection locations, community events, and trade shows is required.


Benefits:

This position will be based in Bethlehem, PA. The regular schedule will be Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


Successful completion of a background check and drug screen is required.
