Job Title: Marine Operations and Vessel Manager

Wildlands Conservation Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Marine Operations and Vessel Manager to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of our marine vessels, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and managing logistics and maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Supervise and coordinate the activities of the marine research team and partners, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our vessels.
  2. Mentor and train skippers and crew members to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties.
  3. Manage the administration, certification, logistics, and maintenance of our vessels and associated equipment.
  4. Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for safe operations on vessels.
  5. Manage staff and crew, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluation.
  6. Procure goods and services for the vessels and projects they support.
  7. Manage and report on budgets associated with the vessels and projects.
  8. Engage with stakeholders, including donors, project partners, scientists, and the Ocean Steward cohort.
Requirements:
  1. Hold a valid SAMSA Certificate of Competency (CoC) with night and dive support ratings, or Master 200T Near-Coastal SAMSA CoC.
  2. Hold in-date valid STCW certificates.
  3. Have experience operating out of Durban and Richards Bay harbours, with an advantage for surf launching of vessels off the beaches of KwaZulu-Natal or Eastern Cape Coast.
  4. Be a highly responsible, self-motivated, and dependable individual with good interpersonal and leadership qualities.
  5. Possess pilots' exemption licences for Durban and Richards Bay, or be willing to obtain them.
  6. Have strong communication, organisational, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  7. Be proficient in the use of MS Office, including Excel and Word, for administration and reporting.
  8. Hold a valid driver's licence.
