Job Summary

As a Lead Controls Engineer – Locomotive NPI Control, you will be part of a dynamic team responsible for developing control strategy requirements and concepts, designing and implementing solutions, performing control system calibration and validation, and supporting issue resolution for both New Technology and New Product Introduction initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and enhance engine and electric drivetrain control system concepts for new technology applications as part of new product introductions
  • Define engine and electric drivetrain control feature/diagnostics requirements and documentation
  • Prototyping new control applications concepts/enhancements through modeling and simulation
  • Develop MATLAB scripts and SIMULINK models
  • Develop feature test procedures to ensure performance meets requirements
  • Perform and document failure modes analysis (DFMEA)
  • Support feature calibration and validation efforts in the engine test cell, integrated hardware simulator testing, locomotive system testing, customer acceptance and field in-service monitoring
  • Support design and documentation updates for safety and regulatory compliance assurance
  • Support commercial requisition and reliability growth through product and platform expansion
  • Collaborate with senior engine, traction & auxiliary control engineers, systems and subsystem engineering, program management, commercial teams, simulation, software, and hardware teams in the application of advanced controls techniques/methods/tools to meet challenging requirements
  • Provide technical guidance to team members and engage a broad range of existing product and technical experts to build design, tools, process, and domain expertise
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years' project experience in engine/powertrain systems, electrical systems/controls modeling, and/or control systems engineering
  • Skilled in designing, using, and analyzing Visio and SIMULINK model diagrams
  • Ability to support on-site locomotive testing & validation
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required
Desired Characteristics
  • Master's degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Aerospace Engineering
  • Proficient in control theory and/or control methods including system identification, logic and state machines, closed loop control systems, and discrete time control system implementation
  • Experience with engine or vehicle powertrain/drivetrain equipment, systems, control, or diagnostics
  • Experience with electric vehicle/hybrid power applications, design, and testing
  • Detailed knowledge of internal combustion engines with respect to engine performance, combustion, emissions control, regulatory compliance
  • Detailed knowledge of rotating electric machines, power electronics, propulsion battery technology
  • Experience with DOORS or similar requirements definition methods/tools and control model auto-coding for high bandwidth, closed-loop real-time control
  • Experience with system-level validation testing
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, oral and written
  • Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
