Position Overview

The role of a Fellow at Inside Higher Ed is a unique opportunity to guide participants through their annual social justice projects. Working collaboratively with the project director, you will contribute to capacity building efforts, sustain community partnerships, and organize faculty retreats and institutes.

This position plays a significant part in the strategic success of Howard University, contributing to its overall mission. You will be part of a talented team that hires qualified candidates for various positions, ensuring a perfect fit for each role.

About the Job

You will lead Summer Institute participants in completing their annual social justice projects. Additionally, you will collaborate with the BQE Project Director on capacity building efforts, sustaining community partnerships, and organizing faculty retreats and Summer Institutes.

Working Relationships

You will interact with internal contacts, including the BQE Project Director, and external contacts, such as Black Queer Everything Faculty Collective, BQE Summer Institute participants, and community partners.

Main Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain our network of academic and community partners
  • Mentor summer institute fellows and provide guidance and support
  • Compile and maintain a resource list of cutting-edge curriculum and movement issues
  • Coordinate and facilitate events virtually and in-person, including faculty retreats and summer institutes
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor
Core Competencies
  • Knowledge of fields of study within the humanities, particularly at the intersections of queer of color scholarship and/or Africana studies
  • Experience or engagement with community-based research and non-profit work
  • Proficiency in Google Suite (e.g., Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, etc.) and Zoom
  • Ability to facilitate group discussions and engage in public speaking
  • Demonstrated commitment to black queer communities and related causes
Qualifications

A BA/BS degree is required; an MA degree in an interdisciplinary or related field is preferred. Advanced PhD candidates or recent PhD recipients who have not started a tenure-track job are also eligible to apply.
