Senior Ecosystems Technical Specialist

At the heart of Conservation International's mission lies a profound understanding that nature and humanity are intricately connected. As a Senior Ecosystems Technical Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in harnessing the potential of natural climate solutions to combat climate change.

We protect nature for the benefit of humanity by leveraging science, policy, fieldwork, and finance. With offices in 30 countries and projects spanning over 100 countries, we partner with governments, companies, civil society, indigenous peoples, and local communities to foster a future where people and nature thrive together.

This position is part of our Carbon Finance team within the Nature Finance Group. Our unit invests in natural climate solutions worldwide, focusing on reducing deforestation and conserving critical ecosystems. These NCS solutions include the protection, enhanced management, and restoration of forests, rangelands, wetlands, and other natural systems.

Job Description:
  • Support the due diligence, development, and delivery of a carbon portfolio of investable NCS site- and jurisdictional-scale initiatives.
  • Assess early-stage pipeline opportunities, conduct project scoping, feasibility, and due diligence, perform field visits, and move priority opportunities to full-scale development.
  • Guide projects through the validation and verification processes for certification standards such as VCS and CCB.
  • Develop and maintain CI's relationships with project partners, consultants, and investors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Candidate Selection and Project Development: Work with regional leads to provide technical review and guidance for project scoping and feasibility assessment.
  • Project Management Oversight: Provide oversight of the scoping and feasibility process, ensuring project information and workplans are developed and shared with stakeholders.
  • NCS Project Development: Act as a lead on managing and delivering project documents, monitoring reports, and related documentation.
  • Due Diligence: Lead desktop and field-level due diligence of NCS project and jurisdictional opportunities.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in forest management, ecology, natural resource management, or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience working on NCS project development and due diligence.
  • Demonstrated experience with NCS carbon accounting approaches and methodologies.
  • Validation and verification of NCS crediting projects.
  • Excellent project management, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, multitask, and deliver quality results.
