About the Role

SC Johnson is seeking a highly skilled Formulation Development Manager to join our team. As a key member of our product development team, you will be responsible for developing innovative formulations to improve the performance of our Repellent and Personal Care products.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Formulation Development: Develop and optimize formulations to meet performance and quality standards.
  2. Collaboration and Partnership: Collaborate with procurement to identify external partnerships and leverage their expertise and formulation capabilities.
  3. Guidance and Support: Guide external partners through the formulation development process to ensure successful testing and scale-up.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that formulations meet internal ingredient standards and industry best practices for safety, scientific significance, accuracy, and recordkeeping.
  5. Performance Testing: Conduct performance testing and draft technical bridging rationale to support claims.
  6. Cost Optimization: Optimize formulation ingredients to manage costs and availability of ingredients for intended function.
  7. Stability Testing: Monitor stability testing, including first production run stabilities, and maintain records thoroughly and concisely compliant with good laboratory practices.
  8. Documentation and Coordination: Prepare samples and track documentation for stability, micro-challenge, toxicological, clinical, and performance testing. Coordinate outside testing with appropriate resources as required.
  9. Supplier Management: Meet with chemical suppliers to be aware of new raw materials and the possible second sourcing of raw materials to meet cost objectives.
  10. Industry Research: Review trade publications and other industry news sources for raw material information, regulatory updates, and educational opportunities.
  11. Raw Material Investigation: Investigate new raw materials and technologies through laboratory experimentation, record findings, and suggest applications.
  12. Data Analysis: Generate data, analyze data, and draw conclusions to make recommendations.
  13. Sales Sample Preparation: Prepare and/or coordinate preparation of sales samples as needed for photography, trade shows, etc.
  14. Project Management: Adhere to project milestones and launch time deadlines.
  15. Data Input: Input data requirements in SAP with accuracy and attention to detail.
  16. Batch Monitoring: Be present for pilot batches and first production runs as necessary depending on formulation and contract manufacturer capabilities.
  17. Quality Scale-up: Work closely with cross-functional team members on ensuring quality scale-up of laboratory formulas.
Requirements
  1. Education and Experience: Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in Brazil. Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or other related science and a minimum of 6 years of experience in the consumer products industry or master's degree with at least 4 years relevant work experience.
  2. Language Skills: Advanced English and Portuguese.
Preferred Skills
  1. Product Development Knowledge: Knowledge of the product development process and experience related to various formulation and delivery system technologies related to products (e.g., aerosol formulation, emulsion chemistry, gel formulation, polymer chemistry, reaction products, surfactants, solvents, builders).
  2. Industry Knowledge: Knowledge of the skin and personal care industry.
  3. Ingredient Understanding: Understanding of the functional properties, proper use, and the environmental impact of ingredients.
  4. Regulatory Awareness: Possess an understanding of regulatory processes, i.e., EPA registrations; experience.
  5. Innovation and Problem-solving: Provide innovative ideas and knowledge with a high degree of integrity, speed, and a results-oriented approach.
  6. Technological Exploration: Explore new technologies and materials, which may have application for product lines and ability to design experiments to evaluate the performance attributes of products.
  7. Scientific Curiosity: Scientific curiosity and the ability to solve technical problems related to formulation and manufacturing.
  8. Communication Skills: Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate accurately and concisely to multiple levels within the company.
  9. Computer Skills: Proficient computer skills; will be required to become competent in the use of PLM (SAP based product management system).
