As a Linux Kernel Engineer, you will be part of a globally distributed team responsible for the development and maintenance of the Ubuntu kernel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team to achieve common goals.
  • Work closely with external silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturer delivery teams on bleeding-edge platforms to drive innovation.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues in the kernel reported by customers, the community, and discovered through rigorous testing to ensure high-quality results.
  • Take ownership of delivering a flavor of the Ubuntu Linux kernel by managing and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Improve tooling and automation for the delivery and test of Ubuntu Linux kernels to streamline processes and increase efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have significant programming experience in C, with Python, Golang, or other similar languages also being highly regarded. Experience with operating system kernel internals and concepts, Linux would be highly valued but not essential. A solid background in git is required, as well as experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred). Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills are necessary.

Requirements:
  • Significant programming experience in C to develop complex software applications.
  • Experience with operating system kernel internals and concepts to design and implement efficient kernel components.
  • A solid background in git to manage and maintain large codebases.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred) to understand and work with different Linux distributions.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills to communicate effectively with stakeholders.

Nice-to-have skills include a strong grasp of device drivers, BSP's, and other low-level system engineering to enhance kernel performance. Prior experience developing with software packaging formats, direct Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience, understanding of Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycle, performance engineering and security experience, solid background in CI/CD and process automation, and prior public involvement with an open-source project can be beneficial.
