Funder: São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) Coding Artificial Intelligence into Science and Technology Policies, Processes, and Systems Project Scope and Aims The incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into contemporary sciences is not restricted to technical applications in laboratories and companies: it extends to the domain of S&T public policies, research evaluation processes, funding systems, and regulatory mechanisms. By being “coded” into these contexts, AI ceases to be merely a tool and begins to constitute normative, decision-making, and organizational infrastructures that shape scientific practice itself. This project aims to investigate how AI is coded into S&T policies, processes, and systems, generating effects on governance, financing, and the organization of scientific research. Guiding questions include
• How does Science and Technology Policy frame AI as a strategic axis for science promotion?
• AI in S&T Policy: How are scientific funding and evaluation systems integrating algorithms into their decision-making processes? What are the outcomes of this practice for the development of research agendas?
• What are the epistemological, ethical, and political implications of this coding for scientific autonomy, the diversity of research agendas, and public trust?
• How are science and technology policies addressing the extreme concentration of data analysis capacity and infrastructure, responding to the problems of inequality in the national S&T system?
• How do International Policy and other mechanisms of scientific and innovation diplomacy interfere in consolidating scientific and technological partnerships and collaborations in the field of artificial intelligence applied to the sciences? Expected deliverables
• Production of at least three scientific papers published in high-impact journals in the field of Science and Technology Studies, Sociology of Science and Technology, or AI and Society.
• Original contribution to national and international literature on science and technology governance in the context of rapid Artificial Intelligence expansion.
• Strengthening of international research networks on AI and the governance of S&T policies.
• Practical inputs for national and multilateral policies aimed at promoting the ethical, democratic, and inclusive integration of AI into S&T. Requirements
• PhD completed in Science and Technology Studies, Sociology of Science and Technology, Innovation Studies, or related fields.
• Proficiency in English.
• Leadership profile and experience in designing, executing, and coordinating research projects.
• Administrative support for conducting STS Lab activities.
• Availability for full-time, in-person work in the City of São Paulo, Brazil.
• Responsible for organizing events and promoting STS Lab activities on social media.
