Country Director, Brazil


The Country Director’s main purpose is to supervise local staff in Brazil and liaise with headquarters program and operation departments to provide oversight, support and leadership across departments to enhance integration, value, consistency, and programmatic effectiveness in the country


Oversight of HSI program staff and operations in Brazil (65%)

  1. Build a cohesive and mutually supportive team in Brazil.
  2. Oversee the implementation of organizational policies and procedures, as applicable.
  3. Ensure orientation and training of all staff in conjunction with HSI HQ staff.
  4. Conduct annual and mid-year performance reviews and provide related recommendations of salary increases, promotion or termination/disciplinary action.
  5. Collaborate with VP, Country Offices and relevant program VP on the creation of job descriptions, as necessary.
  6. Ensure that local program staff are coordinating with global program leads in the development of programmatic strategy and identification of resources needed for program implementation.
  7. Review and submit for approval contracts and invoices in compliance with organizational policies.

Draft yearly budget for HSI program and operations in Brazil, ensure appropriate implementation of the approved budget.


Desired Minimum Qualifications:

1. bachelor’s degree in communications, law, business management, international relation, or other related field or equivalent work experience required.

2. A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in strategic communications or advocacy, preferably in the animal protection field required.

3. Experience in reviewing administrative documents including contracts and budgets.

4. Experience of working in a cross-departmental leadership position.

5. Management/supervisory experience required.



Mandatory Knowledge and Skills:

· Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines.

· Fluency in English and Portuguese.

· Ability to work collaboratively and proactively to anticipate steps, needs and identify risks and opportunities.

· Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive.

· Ability to manage issues requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Knowledge of business operations, including effective budget development and management processes.

· Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes.

· Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
