Job Overview

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is seeking a highly skilled Portfolio Specialist to join its team in Brazil.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB) to design, monitor, and implement various projects related to climate change, biodiversity, and environmental degradation.

The incumbent will oversee the efficient implementation of GEF-5, GEF-7, and GEF-8 projects in Brazil, leading the operationalization of projects in final consultation stages, and ensuring timely start-up and implementation phases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance to project management units, address management challenges, and ensure the development of annual work plans and budgets.
  • Chair FAO Project Task Force meetings, co-chair Project Steering Committee meetings, and other management mechanisms to secure continued alignment with GEF policies and FAO procedures.
  • Ensure good quality annual Project Implementation Review (PIR) and FAO's Project Progress Reports (PPR) are prepared and delivered in due time.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Advanced university degree in Environmental and/or Social Sciences, preferably with master's degree in one of the same areas or linked to natural resource management and sustainable development.
  • At least 5 years of experience in portfolio management and coordination of programs focused on food, agriculture, biodiversity, forestry, or related areas.
  • Working knowledge of English and Portuguese, and be a national of Brazil.

Desirable Skills

In addition to the above requirements, it would be beneficial if you have:

  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills.
  • Ability to write bankable project documents.
  • Ability to analyze and integrate diverse information from various sources.
  • Extensive experience in leading or facilitating inter-institutional processes, preparing projects and programmes, results-based monitoring and supervision of multidisciplinary projects, securing funding, negotiating and implementing GEF or GCF projects, and writing technical reports in English.
