Technical UI Designer Role Overview

A critical member of our team will be responsible for implementing UI systems in Unreal engine, creating rapid prototypes, layouts, and visual scripting solutions. This individual will also focus on enhancing our workflows and collaborating with UX Designers, UI Artists, and UI Engineers to deliver high-quality features to a global user base.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design UI Systems by breaking down feature/wireframes into necessary widgets, structures, and classes; ensure UI performance by promoting best practices among colleagues.
  • Evaluate assets/UI against memory and CPU constraints; learn to profile performance and optimize UMG/Slate/C++/and texture memory usage.
  • Implement blueprint logic when presentation demands it. Assist UI Artists where needed in implementing special presentation behavior. Consult with UI engineers on the logic that will be in the blueprint vs native code.
  • Debug blueprints/UMG issues efficiently using various tools and techniques.
  • Support UX, UI Art, and UI engineering teams in organization, documentation, and workflow improvement initiatives.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • 3-6+ years of experience building UI and experiences in game engines and across multiple platforms (mobile, web, pc, consoles) or similar transferable experience.
  • 2+ years of experience shipping updates and new features to a user base on a regular cadence or similar transferable experience.
  • Professional experience using game engines (Custom engine, Unity, UE4, Lumberyard, Snowdrop, etc.) and preparing game assets for them. The ideal candidate has an eye for pixel-perfect UI and can identify potential issues with mockups as they bring designs into the engine.
  • The successful candidate is a logical problem solver with attention to detail.
  • They must be able to effectively communicate technical information across departments (summarize technical issues, talk to engineering about UI Art needs, etc.) and demonstrate empathy for non-technical team members, empowering others on their team.
