Associate General Counsel Role Overview

The Talent Acquisition department is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Associate General Counsel, Labor. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the overall strategic success of the university.

Key Responsibilities

This Associate General Counsel will represent Howard University and Howard University Hospital as the principal legal and strategic official in labor-management relations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Representing management in collective-bargaining negotiations, legal proceedings, arbitration, and mediation
  • Interpreting collective bargaining agreements
  • Providing guidance and assistance with labor relations matters (including grievances, legal claims, and administrative complaints)
  • Dispute resolution and employee discipline
  • Training labor relations staff, managers, supervisors, and management officials on labor law
Requirements and Qualifications

The ideal candidate must have:

  • A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Five years of post-J.D. legal experience, including at least three years of substantial labor relations experience
  • Strong academic record and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Membership or eligibility for membership in the District of Columbia Bar
Core Competencies

The successful candidate should possess:

  • Detailed knowledge of federal and local laws applicable to employment and labor relations
  • Knowledge of union grievance procedures and grievance arbitration processes and procedures
  • Ability to conduct and manage adversarial proceedings on behalf of the university
  • Ability to plan, direct, and conduct independent legal research and related analyses
