Geotechnical Engineer

Moffatt & Nichol is a global infrastructure advisor specializing in large complex waterfront projects. We are seeking a skilled Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Sao Paulo.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing and analyzing the ground conditions on which structures will be constructed or operated. This includes examining soil, checking groundwater flow, and conducting tests to ensure stability before construction begins. Additionally, they will develop structural and geotechnical projects for foundations and retaining structures.

Our ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and practices, as well as excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. They should be able to work independently and as part of a team, with good communication and collaboration skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare specifications and interpret field test data to estimate soil engineering properties for foundation design
  • Recommend and monitor lab tests on items in a laboratory, interpreting results and producing reports for project managers
  • Perform construction site inspections and prepare inspection reports
  • Design and analyze geostructural systems for waterfront structures, including bulkheads, retaining walls, deep foundations, and flood control structures
  • Develop wall structural components, considering local and global soil stability
  • Design buried structures and prepare construction drawings and contract documents
  • Ensure safety quality standards are met on all projects, inspecting foundations and reviewing work plans as necessary
  • Present possible project risks and evaluate seismic activities' geotechnical effects, making recommendations for foundations and excavation activities
  • Resolve design problems, performing field investigations, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations
  • Manage and lead multidisciplinary projects, coordinating local and international professionals and subcontractors
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or relevant experience
  • M.Sc. degree in geotechnical engineering
  • Fluency in English (Essential)
  • 15+ years of experience
  • Professional Engineer licensure in Brazil CREA
  • Experience and proficiency with geotechnical software packages, including lateral pile analysis, axial pile/drilled shaft analysis, pile group analysis, slope stability, excavation support, finite element analysis, and settlement analysis
Working Conditions

This role requires the ability to work in an office environment with occasional site visits. The selected candidate will need to navigate unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
